Generic Unmarked Boxy Buildings on Ham's Bluff Road Surrounded by Razor Wire
Anyone know what these places are? They're HUGE, and surrounded by enough concertina wire to wrap Gitmo twice. Some are labeled VI Nat'l Guard, but some are just blank. Trying to view them on Google, one is even "greyed" out, like it's a security site. What's going on on the North West shore?
(Seriously, I've always wondered this and in ten years no one has been able to give me a verifiable answer, which makes it seem all the more mysterious. Why build out there in the middle of nowhere?)

ETA: Plus, there's an "executive airport" sign out there near Sprat Hall. Seriously? There's a private landing strip in F'sted? I can't see it on Google Earth. Can anyone confirm?
The airport sign is where Bolke lives, the FBO at the airport. The buildings are where the undersea communications cables terminate, telephone and data .

Thanks. But your answer just raises more questions.
Why wouldn't the FBO be AT the airport? Why is the sign way out by Sprat Hall? And, there's no obvious strip or parking area for GA craft visible on Google. That makes no sense, unless I really don't understand what an FBO is. (And it's likely I don't.)
Also, WHO OWNS the undersea cable communication whathaveyous? Why is everything wired up like a terrorist bunker? Why is it greyed out on Google (an option usually reserved for national security sites)? I haven't seen that much security ANYWHERE in the islands, including the jails, courts, and police stations (who, probably need it more; the road up on Ham's Bluff is security enough -- the potholes alone are bigger than your average Suburban). I used to sell real estate in Obama's and Louis Farrahkan's neighborhood. Doesn't look anything like this -- even when he's in res. Of course, Louis has UNDERGROUND bunkers and tunnels.

It is Level 3 Comunications. This is the landing hub for all internet wire from North America to South America. It is very high tech. So there are two buildings for them and the first building from Sprat Hall is AT&T network building. Bill & Tuddy Bohlke have the sign down the road so that when they have off island guess, they will see their sign. They own Bohlke Airlines. The sign is kinda a little joke. If your into aviation then you understand the joke. If you don't then you ask on this forum. 🙂

Thanks. That explains the sign. And, yeah, I'm not really into aviation, so that also explains why I didn't get it was a joke. I knew Bohlke operated out of Rohlson, so that sign always confused me.
As far as the buildings, are you talking about 20 and 23 Northside? And L3 bought Global Crossing, were these GC buildings before? These are private companies, no? Why is 20 Northside greyed out on satellite maps? Is this part of the RT Park? And is everything else out there then Nat'l Guard? If you drive waaaaaay to the end of Ham's Bluff, past the turn off for Scenic, it dead ends at something called (I think, I didn't want to get out of my car) "VI Nat'l Guard Medical Training Something Something". Again, more concertina and fencing and security cameras and whatnot. I was waiting for dogs. Or voices from loudspeakers. Why so sneaky sneaky?

Oh. Now I get it:
"We are collocated in the St. Croix Global Crossing sub-sea fiber optic cable head station which is designed to be fully operational during earthquakes and sustained category 5 hurricane winds.
Two redundant groups of four 650 KVA power generation plants and 36 hours of independent battery backup
The building is an NSA high security facility; equipped with CCTV monitoring and programmable proximity card entry systems.
550 Tons of 100% redundant critical humidity and temperature controlled HVAC systems.
Clean agent FM 200 fire suppression systems."
Jebus. If only they built our hospitals so well.

Well. Now, between my flipping off the DEA helos the other day and scouting Northside yesterday, I think I can safely assume both the NSA and the DEA know I'm here. (Not that they didn't already.)
I wonder how much of that unconstitutional data-mining crap that AT&T was a part of went through that NSA/AT&T facility on the NW shore.
I should probably stop asking questions unless I want to end up applying for asylum with the Ecuadorian embassy.

I believe years ago the facility also was owned by the US Navy. This explains the stout construction of the buildings and the security.

Well, the security is because they are STILL NSA sites. The construction may be attributable originally to the Navy, but the maintenance is IMMACULATE and can only be ascribed to continued FEDERAL government funding. God knows, the local government isn't keeping these properties up.

The local government has nothing to do with those 2 buildings owned by Level 3 Communications(They bought out Global Crossing about 3 years ago). They are only considered high profile sites because it is one of the main hubs connecting communications lines between North and South America. The undersea cables connect to Florida, New York, Panama,Venezuela and Brazil. Level 3 pays for all maintenance and upkeep for those buildings. It's an important site so it's taken care of well.

Agreed, they are not controlled by the local government, but confidential research reveals the feds are definitely involved. It is not a solely private venture.
And I'm scared of the NSA so I'm gonna stop talking about them now.

I'd love to know where you're getting your confidential research. This could get fun listening to all the unsubstantiated rumors and ideas of what may go on in those buildings.

Client confidentiality. Sorry.
Also I really am scared of the NSA.

Well, I know from an inside source(me) what goes on in those buildings as I work in them. 🙂

Well than we may know each other but not know it!
