Geminid Meteor Shower: The most spectacular of 2010
G'day everyone,
The most intense meteor shower of the year -Geminid Meteor Shower- will occur on Monday, Dec.13th and Tuesday,. Dec. 14th. complete with "fireballs."
The best time to see the event is after midnight, looking South at the constellation Gemini, but will be seen above the horizon all night and overhead around 6AM. over dark skies when the moon is low and Gemini is high. Approximately 120 meteors / hr. are expected.
Unlike most meteor showers, which are caused by Comets, this event is caused by dust and debris off of a Rocky Object which NASA named 3200 Phaethon, a 98lb. rock that may be a chip off of a larger (544km) asteroid named Pallas. At this point it is a guess among other possible scenarios.
3200 Phaethon was discovered in 1983 by NASA's IRA Satellite (Infrared Astronomical Satellite) - a joint venture between the UK, Netherlands, and US. The satellite orbits at 563 miles above the Earth.
Hope the skies are clear! Enjoy!
