My wife and I were in STX last weekend to look at buying a condo! We really like Schooner Bay. We heard that they are going to move the commercial marina elsewhere on the island and turn it into a pleasure boat marina with a new boardwalk, shops etc! Has anyone heard or know of this rumor? it might make or brake our thoughts of buying there!

Thanks for everyone's help!

they have permits to expand the marina and add larger slips for luxury yachts. I don't know that they'll get rid of the commercial stuff, as there really isn't another good location to move it to. The barges will still come into the customs house and the passenger ferry will stil come in, also. They have talked about extending the boardwalk from the fort to the marina since they completed the extension as far as Seabourne a couple years back. Development on STX takes time. These things will undoubtedly come to pass, but likely not as fast as you would expect if you are used to the rapid approach of development on the mainland.

Hello there! The last thing I heard at the Travellers' Tree (a shop in Gallows Bay) is that yes, the approval for the boardwalk and greater private boat capacity are in place, however, as Alexandra said, when is kind of an open ended question. It is like the Christiansted bypass. I had heard about it over two years ago, and rather forgot about it until I saw the earth movers coming over the mountain....literally!

It seems that there is quite a bit of development going on already in Gallows Bay, and I suspect that in part this is due to this area (I live in Flamboyant Welcome, just across the street from Gallows Bay) being prime in terms of development and the boardwalk being a part of that. One commercial/professional condo development close to the Schooner Bay Market was posted late last year. I assumed it would be years before it came into being, but it is already framed out and filling in. They are also creating greater parking capacity (much needed). As such, just three years ago this area felt quite removed from Christiansted proper, but now is becoming a part of, or at least kind of a suburb of Christiansted.

I hope this is of some help to you, and please feel free to drop me a note if you would like any further information,

Best regards,

Dan Gilbride
