GACOROOF Silicone Roof Coating re; Cisterns
Just thought I might share this with the community for the sake of safety. I have been wanting to re-coat my roof and could not get an answer from the sales people I asked on the Island in regards to the safety of this product. No one, I asked, could tell me if it was safe or not as a roof coating for a roof that fed a cistern. So I called the Manufacturer and they said they "absolutely do not recommend it for a roof which feeds a cistern". I read the warnings on the container which sound harsh as most coatings do. But no specific information about the cistern issue is on them. I hope this post keeps others safe, and if you happen to be someone who used the product. Please make sure the water that washes over it is not consumed by anyone. On the other hand, it appears to be a super roof coating for roofs that do not feed cisterns. Just want to be fair.
Doug
Thanks for the information. I don't know what coating they used on ours but it won't be long before it needs to be redone so it's nice to know since most roofs do feed cisterns here.
Doug,
Good call, as a contractor in PR I have had vast dealings with these elastomeric coatings, they seal and greatly reduce the heat by reflectorization and absorbtion, with the down side being they must be applied properly. And they contain chemicals that could possibly cause cancer in California.
And now the good news, you have a Home Depot now that carries similar products that are safer to use on your roof. Regardless where your water comes from, it should be filtered. A very popular product I have been installing allot of is a GE water purifier duel filtration system. They sell it at Home Depot, very easy to install, Quality fixture at a reasonable price. It will provide you with clean drinking water,

next question, do you drink your cistern water regardless of the roof coating you use i have 3 filters and ultraviolet and i still won't drink it or use it for cooking
We use Vulkem for our roof coating, have no filtration system, chlorinate the cisterns periodically, drink and cook with our cistern water, and have never had any adverse effects from our water. We also always drink tap water when we eat out and have never had a problem.
i've been drinking my well water for years with no adverse effects, it's just that when i put it in my cistern i lose my desire to drink it, it's just me i suppose.
Talonz--out of curiosity are you coming to work for Home Depot (I ask b/c it is not the first time you have mentioned that big box)?
If so, maybe you can do something about their stocking system. They are routinely out of everything~~~~
