Furniture/buying and selling/Antiques/Upholstery shop
Just want to know if there are any good sources to obtain what i might need to furnish my condo...am looking forward to learning as much as I can...Don't want to use Home Depot...except for paint, plumbing and appliances...Ideally, I would like authentic island batik, and artisan fittings to personalize my space.
I plan to ship my own, but need to find out more specifics on what services i can find available to help transform to suit Island living...am already thinking white cotton duck slip covers, using color batik fabrics found locally to make pillows, etc. Just wondering if anyone on the Island does this....thanks...
Where is your condo?
On STX there are several upholstery shops. There is an up-cycle store in Christiansted although the name escapes me. I don't know of anywhere to buy good quality fabrics on island but I found some nice cotton batik clothing at the Women's Colition thrift store that I've cut up to make pillows from.
I only wish I had the guts for white cotton duck anything. Dogs and Saraha dust make it too much work.
The St Thomas UVI campus offers batik making classes and students and teachers sell their work. Here's info about the previous class.

I thought they sold batiks in St Croix at the art gallery in Frederiksted. Are they still open? Haven't heard anything about them in a while. Will Google...
Which island are you moving to?
St Lucia. Grenada. Have been to batik factories in both places.
Don't know why I assumed STX, but anyway...
Up-cycle place in Christiansted closed a while back.
Lots of recyclable furniture at AWC Flea Market in Richmond, and at the Women's Coalition (although the latter is more ready to go).
Debbie Sun in C"sted http://www.debbiesun.com/ has some really nice upscale textiles (pillows, etc). Probably too expensive for yardage. http://www.debbiesun.com/
The Blue Mutt in C"sted offers classes periodically by Isabelle Picard, who specializes in painting tropical motifs on old furniture. http://www.isabellepicarddesign.com/
The Caribbean Museum in F'sted periodically has classes by Yemaya Jones in tie dye (maybe batik also), but fabrics used not heavy enough for uphostery or slipcovers.
Also Women in the Courtyard meet there on Wednesdays - nice group to keep in touch with the local craft scene.
Just for the heck of it -- visit Sweet Lime Furnishings. http://www.sweetlimefurnishings.com/ They may not have anything you need or can afford, but worth the trip.
Personally, I like white duck slip covers -- can be washed and bleached (for dog owners).
Fabrics.com for upholstery weight fabrics
there is a place by gallows bay right next to the old ice cream place at the by pass in christiansted that has some antiques. really nice lady. cant remember the name of the store though.
not sure if the upholstery place is still open in gallows bay?
There's a new consignment store in Sion Farm called Beach House Consignments who always have some great furniture and stuff.
Don't know why I assumed STX ...
Don't know either but you're in good company!

Its on the main road in the old Weisner plaza, west of the National Guard office.
Wow!
$165 for throw pillows @ debbie.com!
