Furniture Shopping
Hey all: So....I'm gonna need to furnish this condo (six days to closing eeeee!!) The stuff that's currently in there is dated and...well...not "me". So. Looking at various furniture stores on the island. Furniture Giant, Island Empire and Ageo seem to be the largest, and I'm sure the prices are going to send me screaming into the night, so will also be checking out Craig's list and the ReUse Emporium. Just wondering what other options I have ie: cost of shipping from states vs. buying on island vs. expediency. Comments? Questions? Jokes?
Thanks 😎
huh. is Ageo even a thing?
I'm pricing stuff on STX and the pricing is about the same as the Ashley Home store in NY. I shopped here in NY first then talked to the Ahmad at bestfurniture (ashley) and sent him what we liked. He's been really helpful. I have also tried another company but they haven't followed up at all, so i sense I will stay away from them. I'm sure I can negotiate it down a bit. I thought it would be crazy high too, but no and there is no sales tax so that is another savings.
good to know - do you have a better choice of stores on STX? (crazy fantasies of renting a barge or some s**t.)
LOL I just redid my living room and dining room and a new master bed frame... from overstock and amazon - care of paradise freight. The best selection is at Carlos furniture. I just didn't want "stock" stuff. Went mid century modern. I decided if I am only working from home here that I wanted my "office" to look nice. We have an ashley here. Meh. Again I don't like that "stock" living room look. On average add $75-80 to the price of each item for paradise freight. Of course its based on weight and dimensions and all my furniture came flat to build.
There's an Ashley on STT??? Where? (I absolutely want "stock"...utilitarian and clean lines in neutral colors. I've got this gawd-awful tile that we're not going to be able to re-do for a while yet, so furniture has to be really simple.)
Hot damn! another one (Carlos) NM AandA, I found it! thx
wow. I have a confession to make. After 16 years of spending A LOT of time on STT, I had no idea that Tutu is a mall-mall. i thought it was a strip mall with a few shops tacked on to the end of Kmart. I've only ever gone to K-mart and never realized there was a whole thing inside. lmao. aye-yi-yi.
I'm not sure Ageo is still in business.
I mentioned it once, a while ago and someone said it had closed.
I bought some couches and sleeper sofa from them quite awhile ago and they've held up extremely well. Still look new.
Silk Greenery has some nice thing but extremely pricey.
Oh dude I am sorry I thought you were STX. Been a LONG day. No ashley on STT but is one on STX. You could always shop online and normaH it. I will be doing a Puerto Rico shopping trip soon for a new couch. West Elm <3
annnnd another one! holy toledo my poor credit card. thank you!
Duuuuuuude tell me about it!!! I cried a little last week when I paid it off. 😮
Furniture Inn by K Mart in town has some nice living room sets.
They might be Ashley.
Don't buy a bed from them tho. Got a king bed/box spring from them a few years ago, supposedly good brand. Spent $1K and 6 months later, it's sagging and they wouldn't replace.
Also the other Arab furniture stores can be less than pleasant to deal with, and not quality stuff IMO. I just don't buy from them anymore due to past experiences.
Also there's a place behind Lt. Governor's Office/Paragon building
Can't think of name, back by Fortress Storage?
ms411 might remember name.
Ageo is long gone.
Silk Greenery has nice furniture and accessories.
Yeah Alana - that's Island Empire - it's on my hit list. I guess my surprise/adjustment is more about the notion that none of this will be in stock from what I can see, no matter where I order from. It's kind of a question who can get me the best deal, quickest. At any rate, I think I'll have to come back down in March or april when all this stuff arrives...oh no...not THAT *gasp*:@)
If you're going to be stateside, you can buy there and ship here
More options, probably better prices.
I recently went through the same thing, furnishing a house that we bought on the north side. I looked at every single furniture store on St. Thomas, and ended up using Silk Greenery. They offer a tremendous amount of design help and their selection is pretty much unlimited. While their things are more expensive, they are also very high-quality, and Silk Greenery stands behind everything they sell. If you are furnishing an entire house Toni will give you a very nice discount. FYI every June for the entire month they have an incredible sale, but probably you don't want to wait that long.
Having said that, the least expensive way to get quality furniture at a reasonable price is to buy it from furniture store(s) in Miami, or anywhere including online if they ship for free in the U.S., have it shipped over to a freight forwarder like Crowley or St. Thomas cargo etc.. The risk is if something arrives broken, and something will, you have to deal with it, but that may be a risk worth taking because you will save a lot of money. I've used Wayfair and Overstock both with great results, also Bed Bath and Beyond, although their online support is the worst.
Good luck!
You also need to make sure that it's not pressed wood due to the humidity factor. At least that's what my furniture guy told me. Maybe he's just trying to upsell me, but that's ok, because I don't want pressed wood anyways.
No pressed wood, ever!
We outfitted our entire condo with Ikea (all of it solid wood, not pressed board). We shopped at the Ft. Lauderdale store and shipped it all to VI Cargo. Although we had to assemble everything--not without effort--it served us much better than buying from the stores on island (STX). We looked at them all and the selections were not to our taste. Plus, the cost would have been much higher than what we ultimately spent at Ikea.

So much great info! Thank you! I would have forgotten all about the pressed wood. Not something I would buy intentionally, but sometimes they do use it for shelves inside cupboards etc so good to know! It's difficult because the island stores don't give any prices on their websites and it's hard to nail down what the difference will be price-wise (buying on-island vs shipping) until I actually arrive on Monday. This is another indication of how this transition won't be quite so smooth as I thought - I live in NYC...I WANT and I GET things now now now!! STT is going to re-acquaint with me patience. lol
You betcha!
" I live in NYC...I WANT and I GET things now now now!!"
Warning, Will Robinson! Warning, Will Robinson!!!
Had no idea what that meant and had to look it up - hilarious!
" I live in NYC...I WANT and I GET things now now now!!"
Warning, Will Robinson! Warning, Will Robinson!!!
Ha! Funny EE.!
That'll certainly be a different learning curve here, for that, Pammerjo!
Be prepared!
Waiting is a part of every day life.
I actually got thru my vehicle registration this morning faster (at the end of the month, mind you) than the time it took me to pick up a package at the Post Office.
Lines are often long, service is often slow, can't find what you want when you want it. If you find something you really like, buy 2 because you'll probably never see that item, again.
Oh well, you probably know all that if you've committed to purchasing a home here. Good luck.
Let know how the furniture hunt turns out.
