furniture in the VI
Hi, I am thinking of moving to the USVI next year. Would it be stupid to bring along an upholstered sofa and a leather couch? The handbook mentions that furniture with a minimum of upholstery is best. But one of the stories on the site mentioned how expensive it is to buy furntiure on the islands; they wished they had shipped it. (Of course I could sell what I've got, get some rattan and ship that instead.) Thanks for any advice! kk
Hello kk,
My only advice is to buy a sleeper sofa or futon. The places here are smaller than the States and if you plan on having visitors or family over, there isn't much room for them to stay. We bought a nice wooden futon here for $350. I don't prefer ratan, but will have some eventually I am sure. We left our couch in storage. It would have been so bulky and we didn't have the room to ship it. I don't miss it and really don't sit on the couch much anyway. Too many things to do outdoors! 😉

Dear Teresa,
Thanks for the tip!

We looked at some furniture stores while we were there and decided to buy a couch there instead of shipping. I was able to sell my sofa set for $1000 - it would have cost me more to ship all three pieces. So now I have some money to shop with for a couch. The place we went to - across the street from Duffy's in STT - didn't seem to be outrageous in price. I don't think you'll want leather in the climate of the islands.
Dear Janelle,
I figured leather was a no-go in the tropics. Darn. It's my favorite piece! Oh well, letting go is sometimes what it's all about!
Thanks!
