... or is it better to ship from the states or puerto rico?

Personally, my experience has been for unique, high end furniture it is better to ship from the States. Selection is limited here and for nice woods, you will pay a premium.
That said, I understand Island Empire in Fortress Storage has some good deals and if you are just looking to furnish a condo for short-term renters, there are plenty of quickie places. For exmaple, there is Rooms to Go.

My suggestion, borne of long experience, is to look out for house sales which are regularly advertised in the Island Trader and Daily News. We have a very transient society and great furniture buys can be had from people moving away because the cost of shipping out is very expensive.

I've also found good furniture over the years when the hotels refurbish/refurnish their rooms and they're basically selling off furniture that's only a couple of years old.

I can't remember the name of the store but the furniture store in Long Bay next to K-Mart has some nice stuff with okay prices. Or I go with Rooms to Go. House sales can net some great furniture as well.

Last time I checked Rooms to Go closed but the place next to KMart in Long Bay is pretty good for value.
