Fresh college grad moving to USVI
I will be graduating from the University of Iowa in Dec. with a degree in business. I plan on working from Dec. to Aug. to save up for the big move. I am curious as to if there is any job opportunities for a fresh college grad in this economy. What is the average cost of living (want to move to St. Thomas) I am used to spending about $1000 a month (rent, utilities, groceries, going out, etc) I am sure it is much higher there. I am used to odd jobs like roofing, cement laying, car dealerships, marines, etc. but would like to get into more of a business field. I am prepared to work whatever I can get. Is there a lot of crime? Will it be hard to find people my age 23-28. Any info I can get to better prepare would be very appreciated! Thanks!
There's sure no shortage of people your age & hopefully the economy will have improved by then. As to crime it's important to not be in shady areas late at night & to keep your wits about you when you are out in the evening. Don't be staggering around drunk or stoned & put a target on your back. Use common sense.
I know some young college grads who work for EDC companies so your business degree might help there. Get a good resume together but don't expect to get a job long distance. Most don't hire until you're in front of them. Your cost of living will be a lot higher here. Make sure you have enough to rent an apartment which will include first/last & security as well as possibly deposits for utilities. Click on forum list at the top of the page & check out the Classified Forum to get an idea of rents but don't rent anything until you've seen it.
You could stay at a place like www.villafairviewusvi.com until you get your feet wet & decide where on island would be convenient to your work location. Good luck & read the tabs at the top of the page & go through the threads here for more info. Best of luck!
I did a simple search on this site and got hundreds of hits. This forum is a great resource for moving to the Virgin Islands.
