Freight Forwarding to STT and Furniture issues
What companies have you used for freight forwarding?
How did you like them?
I noticed VI Cargo ships to STX, how to do you get things from STX to STT or should one just use a different company?
I'm obviously trying to figure out how to most effectively move household goods and make furniture orders. It's quite the job.
If I did come down and buy new are there decent furniture stores accessible?
Do people take a boat to PR to make large purchases and bring it back?
We have several furniture stores on STX and they are reasonable. They will also only sell furniture that does well in the Caribbean. You can also have them order stuff in and let them deal with the shipping. However delivery times can be all over the place. If you are going to ship anything down make sure it will also do well. No pressed/particle board junk and be careful with leather. I use VI cargo. I'm sure there are others that ship direct to STT.
How would I get an item from STX to STT. Use our own boat? Just trying to think of practical logistics. If I can purchase furniture there it would make things easier for us!
You can order things online and have them shipped through Tropical. If you think you are going to need a lot of things, like a container full, best to just use a logistics company to handle consolidating for you. I've used Gemini Logistics out of Jacksonville and they are great to work with. Then use a clearing company on St. Thomas to clear the items, I use Boynes Trucking. The process can be a little daunting if you are not familiar with it but it's really not that difficult. I do this sort of thing for my job, so just let me know if I can try and help answer questions.
I've been on the phone with several companies and have people telling me all sorts of opinions, etc. It's nice to see continuity in experiences and recommendations. I keep hearing Viking is a good company on the VI side and to stay away from Bob Lynch, although I must say the woman on the phone at Bob Lynch was very helpful and full of practical advice.
Any input on True North as freight forwarding company?
Tropical seems to have a good reputation as far as freight forwarding, along with VI cargo.
