Free Wi-fi on St. Thomas or St. John
I know that the USVI is sometime a bit behind the states when it comes to hi-tech (I also know alot you like it that way!!), but does anyone know of any locations on Stt or stj that have free wi-fi. I have found a few places that charge about $15.00 per day, like the Crown Bay Marina, but I would like to avoid the charges, if possible.
$9.95 for Greenflash in Crown Bay or American Yacht Harbor. Gets cheaper if you buy more time.
No free wifi that I know of.
Internet's not "free"!
Someone has to pay for the service. So pony up the 10 bucks, or go to an internet cafe.
Best,
LR
You were so kind in your answer. This part, I know that the USVI is sometime a bit behind the states when it comes to hi-tech (I also know alot you like it that way!!),
Made me say, why answer this guy? as we are not high tech, so we can't be reading this stuff!

No offense Ronnie - I made the comment with tongue in cheek! Most larger cities in the states have numerous cafes, etc. with free wi-fi to attract customers - and it works for everyone. It only costs one time $60.00 for the hardware to install a 200' radius system that will broadcast to anyone in the area with a wireless card in their laptop.
Andy, don't pay any attention to Ronnie. He's still living in the disco era.....
That being said, Gallows Point lobby on STJ has great wi-fi connection. I also believe but am not sure, but you might be able to connect out side of the internet cafe or whatever it is on the second floor of Marketplace, also on STJ.
Thanks for the input. I also found that a number of the villa's on St. John are also broadcasting a wi-fi signal.
Andy: I am curious if you are asking this as a future resident or as a visitor?
Yes, there are plenty of wireless 'hot spots' here. Search them out and you will find them as I did in our technology challenged island. The cruise ships are usually open. As I look at my other wireless signals in my area, there are 3 unsecured.
Some places do charge as I am charged for mine when I travel. I know Starbucks has T-Mobile which you have to pay for, as well as most hotels and even the Admiral's Club. If others do it in the states for free, that's okay too. I have not noticed many free spots stateside either. It's a hit and miss basis as it is here.
Good luck.

Promoguy, get a life!!
Hey Ronnie, next time you're here in our local area, give me a call there are many, many, many, many free spots. Incidentally, the hot spots on the cruise lines usually require a reconfiguration. It was such a pain to get mine going on a cruise, I just used their computers.
East Ender,
I am a regular visitor to the islands. I come down 2 or 3 times a year for 2-3 weeks. I generally move around alot when I'm there. I have a small boat and do alot of camping too. It's paradise! I appreciate all the help and ideas. I'll just have to do some more investigating next time I come down in November.
Andy: I asked because you posted here and on the vacation board. My comment is: I know visitors want paradise to be like it is at home but with better weather ;). But if you are going to live here and your expectation is that you will have all the comforts of life in the states, you will be let down :(.
East Ender,
Right you are about the comforts - but the great weather, beautiful surroundings and people are surely worth the effort. I can do with paying for access to the internet. BTW - do you live on STT or STJ? The east end of STJ is probabably my favorite place in the USVI.
Andy: I live on St Thomas.
Speaking of Wi-Fi can someone fill me in on the availability of highspeed home internet access. I am hoping to relocate to the VI in the "hopefully" near future. My business though requires lots of high speed internet access, I work from home..
What is the status of cable modems, DSL etc on STX, STT, STJ
Thanks in advance for the assistance,
Mark
Mark:
No cable modems. DSL offered by Innovative is spotty as to availability speed and reliability.
Most other providers in the VI offer WiFi service requiring line of site to their tower. For residential service expect to pay $50 for 192K service. Higher speeds are available, but expect to pay $500 - $600 per month for speeds comparable to HSI on a cable modem.
With more competition and newer technology speeds may go up and prices should come down.
Jim
You need to talk to the wonderful folks at Ackley Communications!
They are good and the service does work if you can establish the line of site connections. It just isn't cheap.
Ackley charges $995 per month for 1.5 mbs.
For a cable modem stateside I pay $39.95 for 5 mbs.
