Augh! The mosquitoes have been horrid for the last few weeks. Anyone have any idea how to get them to stop swarming my dog? My vet could only offer spraying him with DEET. He lays on the porch and 10 minutes later he is swarmed by 2 or 3 dozen of them. They pound on him all day long. They just never go away! Freakin' skeeters!

Aussie,

Are you on STT? If so go to the feed store in Smith Bay. It's under the stairs in the same strip center as the Texaco Station. Ask the guy for PINK STUFF. Rub it on the poor pooch and he will smell really nasty to skeeters and flies. Won't hurt him.

Many thanks for your response, Pamela!

Nope, STX. Any idea what that pink stuff is? And he shares the bed with me. Just how bad will he smell to me? 😀

Any of the feed stores in /sTX will have it. I threw my last jar away yesterday so I don't really know what is in it but I have used it on my legs and arms before. It works and doesn't smell bad at all to us but flies and skeeters hate it. I almost like the way it smells but I might be swayed by the fact that it actually works 🙂

Very cool and many thanks, Pamela! I'll look for it. I've gotta get serious about the skeeters here. Both my boy and myself are getting bitten far too often. The source seems to be the back yard chicken farm just downwind from me. How many trays of water do they think a frickin' chicken needs?

AUGH...this is the worst I've ever seen the skeeters. They're gonna suck us dry!

Pamela, I checked 2 feed stores - no pink stuff. Next time you get some, would you be so kind as to post what it is? Thanks!

I've been having some limited success by taking a vitamin B1 pill. They're cheap enough and it might work for you and yours.

A number of weeks ago we had VI waste management come out and pick-up about 90 odd dumped tires that lined the road running adjacent to our property (after we pulled them all out of the bush). Our mosquito population has dropped dramatically.

Consumers Report just had a thing on the news here.
Burts Bees the worse
Cutter Backwoods the best

Knock wood, I haven't seen or felt more than a few skeeters in my two months on STX.

Having lived in Minnesota, where the mosquito is the "state bird," I was expecting more but am happy to find fewer than in MN.
