Food Stuffs
We are preparing to make the big move and were curious to know whether or not we can bring canned goods that we still have in our possession. Any thoughts or experience?
are these home-canned? Or store-bought? There isn't any trouble at all shipping canned goods that came from a store. There probably isn't a problem with home-canned fruits and veggies, either. What Agriculture watches for when they do their inspection is fresh, home-grown fruits and veggies that may carry some kind of pest. They allow any fruits that are already cut up for consumption, but object to whole fruits. They also don't allow plant cuttings and/or soils.
Hello,
I found some information on the US Customs website that might help answer your question. Here is the link http://help.customs.gov/cgi-bin/customs.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=82&p_created=1043364936&p_sid=R*h4S5Mh&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfcm93X2NudD01NDgmcF9wcm9kcz0mcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=&p_topview=1

Thanks for the info. To be clear, are you saying that all goods will be inspected?
Ohioans,
All goods are not inspected but there are spot inspections and you don't know whether or not your goods will be inspected. If your goods are spot inspected and the inspectors find anything they deem worthy of a further look they will do a thorough inspection of your belongings by unloading the container and looking in every box. This is uncommon but it has happened. Canned food is heavy and in the scheme of things probably more expensive to ship than to replace as your shipping charges will be determined in large part by the weight of your belongings.
A bit off the subject (and probably obvious to a lot of people) but the TSA person going through my stuff during my last departure from STT happened upon a fairly sizeable wedge of cheese in my carry-on ....recent purchase and didn't feel like throwing it in the trash so I'd brought it along. He advised against me bringing anything like that ever again. Evidently a wedge of cheese is a huge red flag (duh, I don't know why I didn't think of it before) for potential drug or explosive object. ok. totally off the original subject but thought I'd share.
Ohioans: dntw8up brought up a point that I was considering addressing in that why would you want to bring canned goods with you? Canned goods are very heavy. We have big supermarkets here which carry pretty much everything, especially in cans. Just curious!
