Flying with Dog to STT
Good Afternoon!
Has anyone recently flown on United to STT with a dog in cargo?
I just got off the phone with United Airlines and was told they don't fly dogs in cargo to STT any more. ... but they will to San Juan? hmm?
(My husband and I are moving to STT this fall and are trying to transport our American Bulldog. We were planning on driving 8 hours to catch a direct flight from DC to STT in attempt to minimize flying time for our dog. As far as I know (after EXTENSIVE research), United is the only commercial airline that will fly American Bulldogs in Cargo.... except from may 15- sept 15)
Before I call back and try to talk with a different agent, I thought I would reach out on here. 🙂
I prefer not to fly into San Juan..... but does anyone have experience with flying a large dog from SJU to STT on Seaborne?
thanks all!
Call Seabourne directly and ask.
I flew my black lab/retriever mix from STT to San Juan and back for orthopedic surgery when she weighed about 90 lbs. They were very nice.
She had to fly cargo on way over due to a full flight but on way back they allowed her kennel to be strapped into the 2 seats across from mine as it was a fairly empty return flight.
Of course, they might have recalled her howling in cargo the entire way over. So embarrassing. Not a peep out of her on the way back!
She enjoyed the scenery.
It's a short flight.
You may want to make arrangements in advance for a taxi to get you to your destination after arrival as not all are willing to transport animals.
american has restrictions on certain snub nosed breeds of animals. yours might be one. also some planes have restrictions based on the temperature of the departing and arriving destinations. look into that
Speedy is right, most airlines will not fly with snub or short snouted dogs for some reason. Have you checked out Delta airlines? They have what they call Pet First or something similar and have no issues flying most animals. BUT, and this is a big BUT, NO airlines will fly animals in cargo during the summer months, which if not mistaken encompasses June, July, August & September especially flying to or from the tropics due to the heat because sometimes cargo might have to sit on the tarmac for 30 minutes or longer.
Also, for what it's worth, I would rather fly into San Juan 7 days a week and twice on Sunday than Miami and once at San Juan, there are numerous charter planes that can bring you and fido to the Island of choice for a couple hundred dollars.

It's clear from what the OP said in her first post that she's done the research, knows about summer travel restrictions but also has discovered that United is the ONLY airline which will ship her breed of dog. Snub-nosed breeds have been banned by the majority of major airlines for several years now because of their predilection for breathing issues - there's a ton of information easily found on the internet on the subject.
Hopefully Seaborne or Cape Air can help with the SJU/STT short hop and that the OP will return to the thread to advise how it went.
I am flying my dog to San Juan and then to stt. Easiest cheapest way to do it is with United and then seaborne.
Way to go, enjoy your adventure of a lifetime.

I just wanted to stop in and say I had this same issue come up today. United told me today that they will not ship my dog to St. Croix. A pet relocation service quoted me more than $2k for the service. I have also been looking for other options. I'm going to be making some calls today - I'll let you know if I find anything, OP
Who was the pet relocation company that gave you the quote for $2K? Was that for you, your pet and unlimited baggage? Just curious as may be traveling with dogs next year, myself.

You're in a different situation from the OP. Your dog as you describe her isn't a snub-nosed breed which most airlines will not fly period - a breed which the OP has - but you're coming here in the summer months when no airlines will transport any dogs in cargo because of the heat. In that case your best option is to leave your dog with family or friends and then arrange for her transportation during the cooler winter months.
Alana, it was just for my pet I believe. But United and AA quoted me $200-300 to fly a pet in cargo. It just has to be under 85 degrees.
I called AA and they have a flight that goes through Miami to VI that will take pets in cargo, but I don't know if that includes your breed. My plan is to find someone to take care of my dog through thanksgiving when I will be returning to visit family. I will bring my dog back with me on my return trip after I have set up an apartment.
Thank you, OldTart. I meant that United doesn't fly pets to VI at all. They will only take them as far as Puerto Rico. Yes, the temperature has to be lower than 85 degrees for any carrier. But United will not take your pet all the way to VI even in cool weather anymore. I had worried that I would not be able to find a carrier that would take her to VI. I am still looking for direct flights.
mathisjl, thanks for the clarification and good decision to wait to bring your pooch down once you're settled in!
Ditto. Thanks and all the best on your move and with your pup.
