FLU SEASON
It's the flu season here on the mainland. My question may be silly, but with the year round warm weather, does the USVI have as bad of flu season as here in the winter?
When tourists or "snow birds" come with the flu, does it spread as bad, or worse?
I've been here 8 years and, to my knowledge, we don't have a "flu season". I've never even had a cold here. I know some people have gotten colds from being on airplanes when they travel with people from the States, but it doesn't spread here like in the States because most homes keep their windows open. And, because of the constant tradewind breeze, even the ones with A/C don't usually breed the germs necessary spread it around too much. Anyone else have another take on this subject?
Marty, yes I have another "take!" I'm a 21 year resident and, touch wood, I haven't had 'flu for many years now but I often wonder if somehow one becomes immune because I DID get the 'flu for several years when I first came here but haven't suffered for many years now - although I did end up in the hospital here with gross pneumonia about four years ago. Was that my punishment for maybe becoming immune to 'flu? I don't know but it was a very bad scene.
We're offered 'flu vaccinatons here but one of the problems is that we have such a diversity of people coming here that different strains escape the shots that we're offered and I know of several people who've had a 'flu shot and then have contracted a different variety - nasty!
I wouldn't worry about it too much, terry, but it certainly is a valid question and obviously I've been of no help whatsoever!
Any health professionals out there who can shed some better light?
