Curious if anyone contemplating relocating to the VI has also looked into moving to the Florida Keys.

I question this because if you, like me, are looking for a slower pace of life with more meaning, gorgeous waters for all your fun wet play and a mean temperature of 80 most of the year - why not take a peak?

Before any die hards flame me - after researching the islands, the schools, expense of moving, etc. - it is not feasible for my family. The kill switch is the schools and lack of services for special needs kids.

So I took a look at the Florida Keys again -

1. Not landlocked
2. Accredited schools with special needs programs
3. Less of a financial drain to move - i.e. no "ship"ping or impact fees on vehicles
4. Clear beautiful water, relaxed pace.
5. Cost of living is comparable to the High End Index on Housing - but all other items, groceries, etc are in line.
6. Big City within an hour (Miami)
7. No State Income Tax
8. The weather - 70-80's most of the time.

Sugar coating is fun, right?

I am familiar with the Hurricanes (lived in Florida for 7 years) - but there is a Highway to drive away from the impending storm, yes?

Anyways - for those families whom are hesitant to move to the VI - take a look at Key West, Key Largo and Marathon (the family Key) - you might just like it.

Happy Islanding!
Andrea

What about the tradewinds that keep the affects of the humidity down. Are they found in the keys too?

That bridge is the thing aboout the keys that I like the least. Anyone from any part of the lower 48, Alaska and Canada can just drive down. The vibe there is180 degrees from what it is here. JMHO.

It stands to reason those whom call the VI home might be protective of their turf - but

My post was to the families whom have disqualified the VI for various reasons and offered an alternative for them to look at. As many current residents agree and have posted on this board - VI's are NOT for everyone.

Trade winds? No idea, never been there for a full year.

As far as the bridge - absolutely people can come down and fly in - same as the thousands of people who fly over and Cruise Ship or otherwise boat or sail into the VI's.

Are you impling the impact of tourist's on the VI is less than the Florida Keys?

Have any of you lived in the Keys for more than a year? Are your comments based on actual living experience there or just speculation or reaction to just a short visit?

"It stands to reason those whom call the VI home might be protective of their turf - but"
-Oh, it has nothing to do with protecting our turf...I just think it's better here. JMHO.

"My post was to the families whom have disqualified the VI for various reasons and offered an alternative for them to look at. As many current residents agree and have posted on this board - VI's are NOT for everyone. "
-Ahh! I see!.

"Trade winds? No idea, never been there for a full year. "
-They are not the trade winds, but it IS breezy...fromt he other direction usually.

As far as the bridge - absolutely people can come down and fly in - same as the "thousands of people who fly over and Cruise Ship or otherwise boat or sail into the VI's. "
-What I meant was that there is a certain "type" of people that visit here, where as in the Keys, you get every kind of people.

"Are you impling the impact of tourist's on the VI is less than the Florida Keys? "
-I'm not *implying* anything. I say what I say and mean it.

"Have any of you lived in the Keys for more than a year? "
-Yep.

"Are your comments based on actual living experience there or just speculation or reaction to just a short visit?"
-Andie, are you trying to start a confrontation on this board? Go back and read what I wrote. That is exastly what I meant to say. And "JMHO" means Just My Humble Opinion. And that's what itis...just an opinion. EWveryone has a right to feel anyway they wishabout any place they wish. Deal with it. YOU have opinions, don't you?

I have not lived in the Keys but did spend 2yrs in South Florida and visited the Keys twice. My opinion is I dont paticularly care for the Keys. I am not defending the V.I.'s because I live here. I know I am only passing through and might be here 3-4yrs tops. The beauty here is unlike anything in Florida and best of all is the cultural experience. It has a small town feel with a metropolitan population being from all corners of the Earth. Here you can escape from the hustle and bustle of the world or engage in a rewarding career. To me the Keys are just an extension of South Florida just seperated by a long bridge and bad beaches. As Marty said....JMHO For those who like the Keys, that is great for them. I say those who make it all the way to the U.S.V.I.'s are looking for more. The Keys are kind of like going half way.

My husband and I moved to the Florida Keys from New York nine years ago. At that time we were all set to move to St. Thomas and two weeks before we were ready to leave Hurricane Marilyn hit St. Thomas. So we ended up in Marathon, our goal was Key West but could not find an apartment as it was in-season and apartments are not plentiful. We stayed in Marathon for almost two years and then went to Key West. Stayed there about a year and a half and decided to try mainland Florida. Hated it!!!. Back to Key West for the last four years. Love it here, the Keys are beautiful, the people are nice, the weather is great, (although right now we have a cold front over us and it went down to 58 last night and only about 66 today), have a good job, but still love St. Thomas more and have just bought a condo on St. Thomas, and hope to be there permanently in the fall of this year. The Keys just don't have the island flavor of the Caribbean that we are looking for. There are no beaches here, they call them beaches but they are not beaches. Housing is very expensive, more than St. Thomas, I could not afford a condo here let alone a house. I think though that this was a good way to adjust to island life before going to St. Thomas. This is an island only 3 miles by 4 miles. The nearest shopping is a 3 and 1/2 hour drive, we are actually closer to Cuba than Miami. We have hurricanes, luckily they all went around us this past season. Most people love the Keys or hate them. If I could not move to St. Thomas and had to stay here I would be fine, but St. Thomas calls and we can't wait. Like Eric in the last post said we are just looking for more.
