When you bring a firearm to the VI, you must report that fact, along with sundry other pieces of information to the police within 24 hours of landing here. (see VI firearms law at : [www.atf.treas.gov]) If you have a carry permit, you will be able to use it while you are a visitor here. If you do not have a permit, I strongly suggest that you get one before coming as the process here is long, drawn out and frustrating.

We are required to have a permit even to keep a firearm at the house. I would think you should have a permit.

" If you have a carry permit, you will be able to use it while you are a visitor here" --- ?? The permit or the firearm or both ??

exactly. i don't want to keep asking the same question, but if i have a concealed carry permit, does that mean i can bring MY gun with me and just take it to the police station when i move and register it with them?

Call the Gunsmithy at 340-772-2529...he'll answer the phone as "Namaste Cafe", as he runs both businesses in the same location, but Clayton is a firearms dealer and he'll know all the answers to your questions and be able to direct you...tell him you heard about him on the board from me...

You will have trouble buying ammunition legally if you don't have a VI Permit. Since you won't be able to bring any ammunition with you, the gun won't be of much use.

I think the Gunsmithy can get it all worked out...I mean, he sells ammo to all the cops...give Clayton a ring....

just talked to clayton. big help, got it all taken care of. only part i'm concerned about is the letters of recommendation. i don't know 1 person on the island, much less 3 to give me a reference.

I went and picked up the paperwork a week ago but haven't completed it all yet. I don't recall anything about 3 letters (of any) of recommendation? Also I'm pretty sure from what I read that a stateside carry license means diddly squat here as relates to an ability to hold onto your gun once the initial 24 hour period is up (I have a CCP as well.)

I need to get my butt in gear and get the papers done as I shipped the guns to a FFL dealer here in STX a couple of weeks ago.

Also regarding the post on ammunition you can bring up to 11 lbs in each checked bag on American - just need to declare it first.

yeah, i was aware of the ammo luggage thing. clayton said that it takes 6-9 months for all the paperwork to go thru so i'd get in gear if i were you. only after the process is complete do you get a coupon that will let your guns be shipped to you. at least this is what i heard. how did you get yours on-island without a coupon? i mean, i think 6 months is ridic. for a waiting period, but i also DO NOT want to illegally bring a weapon into another country. er...territory. you know what i mean. i'm game for anything short of smuggling drugs and/or weapons.

I shipped some weapons to D & J Shooting (340-713-9058) here in STX as they are a range and FFL dealer. They will keep the weapons there until my permit is done but I can use them at the range anytime I like - just can't take them home for now.

Ah, good to know that taxation without representation is alive and well. 2nd amendment doesn't apply to the USVI, nor does case law (evidently). You may pay your taxes, but do not expect that old bill of rights to go along with those taxes! Good to know.

They don't have much of an inventory. If you want to buy a firearm you probably will need to have it shipped from another dealer to D&J.

They are nice people.
