Fire - South Shore, STX
Mid-afternoon today, I could see smoke over towards South (East) shore of STX...didn't think that much of it since we have had quite a few brush fires as of late because of the extreme dryness. After I went downtown (C'sted) to run some errands and got back up to the house, there was a ton of smoke and I could smell it pretty strongly at the house (Recovery Hill). I have watched it all evening and can now see flames over the ridge...a little disconcerting, to say the least. Does anyone have any info on this fire??
someone said it was a brush fire, she said there was a fire truck there
'Tis the season. There was a fire and fire trucks were there. Some Tan Tan got burned. This happens every year at this time. What else is there to know?
only 75 acres this time. no big deal.
Just looked a lot more significant from here, I suppose. This is relatively new for me, coming from STT - never really saw all of the brush fires like here. Thanks for the updates from all!

75 acres is a lot to burn. All those poor critters!
This happens every year. I think its good to burn off all that TanTan regularly. Too much fuel build up is worse. Having an arsonist around is a bit of a concern however.
i agree alana, i always think about that too
That's a lot of beneficial plants, birds, bird's nests, tortoises, lizards, maybe deer, cats dogs, other wild or domesticated creatures that get burnt to a crisp. Not good.
Many use TanTan as food tho we consider it a nuisance.
Tortoises? Never seen any wild ones here.

For several years I had a wonderful red-footed South American tortoise here and he was an entertaining old fellow. I call him "Lumberjack" as he was a bit of a lumbering oaf. There are several on STT - Ronnie Lockhart has a veritable herd of them. My old friend John Battles had one for several years in his condo at Cowpet which used to try and hump the chair legs, much to John's wife's dismay. That one's name was "Fang" and definitely was a male until one day Fang flang out an egg ... He/she was eventually donated to Coral World.
I've had them all over my property, seen them on the road here on more than one occasion on STT.
Years ago, had a thrushy drop a just hatched baby one on my 2nd story deck and I kept it until it could fend for itself, a couple yrs later. They live to be almost 100 according to the Vet I consulted and get to be the size of a football.
When I found Lucky, she was upside down, waving her tiny arms and legs, trying to right herself. To no avail. I debated calling her Snack or Tidbit.
When I found her on my deck, she was the size of a 50¢ piece.
I kept her until she was about the size of my hand. One of my dogs as a puppy could not figure out why this rock moved and would bark whenever she encountered her. What's that?
Lucky disappeared one day after I'd introduced her to roaming the courtyard. I worried.
The following year, I went to check what Hershy was barking at.
There was Lucky, back to visit.
I knew her from the markings on the underside of her shell on her belly. She visits every couple of years and I treat her to goodies.
Then she wanders back off.
I've had other tortoise on the property over the course of the years.
They blend quite well with the earth and surroundings.
If the rock looks like it's moved, it may be a tortoise!:@)
I'm so glad the tortoises in STT did not get harmed by the fires on STX.
😮
Me too!
However y'all have your own critters that became victims due to the fires and possibly having 20144:20145:30a person responsible for setting them and land on fire get away with it and a lack of immediate response that allowed 75 acres to burn.
Got it?

Yes no people were harmed apparently
