Hi all, and thanks for any advise that might be brought.

My husband is a 'Persian Gulf' VET and we are planning to move within the next year. He is dead set into taking his Colt 45 with us. We have read a lot about the issue but have gotten no-where! Any and all advise will be welcomed on how to transport the gun (legally!)

Thanks, Jimi!

The gun needs to be shipped by a Federally licensed dealer in the states to a Federally licensed dealer here.

You didn't say which island you are planning to move to. But on St Croix the only place you can ship a weapon to is D&J Shooting Range. They will store it for him until he obtains his firearms permit from the police department. While stored at D&J he will have access to the weapon for use at D&J's range.

Do not attempt to hide the weapon - or any ammunition - among any household goods you may be shipping down.

Also, if he doesn't yet have one, your husband should get a small safe or gun box that can be bolted to the floor in which to store the weapon.

Perhaps the airlines have changed their rules or VI Gov't has changed the rules on shipping weapons from the U.S. but most airlines have on their web sites the "rules" of having unloaded weapons in luggage. When I flew to STX in Jan 2007 to permanently live here, American Airlines allowed you to have an unloaded weapon in your checked luggage. All I had to do was put the weapon in a locked gun case, and delcare it at check-in at the airport and fill out AA's form for having an unloaded weapon. The shells were in their own box and also were in checked luggage.

Curious where your weapon and ammo were stored until you received your firearms license.

i was under the impression that you could not legally be in possession of a weapon until you have your permit in hand.
also, carry conceal is from what i understand only for business owners . i am sure there are other types of people that can get a carry conceal also. police, military etc. but not just your average joe homeowner.

Not sure you read my question correctly. Sounds like you're answering for present time. I was wondering where your weapon & ammo were stored BEFORE you had your license. If not at a licensed dealer or at Police HQ you were in violation of VI law - regardless if the airline allowed you to transport it.

Speee1dy is correct. It is illegal to possess a firearm (or ammunition) before you have a license. In fact the penalty for possession of unautthorized ammunition is sometimes greater than possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Use of an unlicensed firearm, even to protect yourself from bodily harm, is also a crime in the VI.
