Finding Work as a Lawyer
Hi!
I'm a law student at the University of Kentucky who will graduate in May of 2006. It's been my dream to move to the USVI and practice law there. Any suggestions on how to get in with a firm or how to go about finding firms looking to take on a green associate? Most law students go through a traditional summer clerkship after their 1st and 2nd years, and end up taking a permanent job offer from those firms, unless that go solo. I have great grades (top 10) and am on the law journal. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
There are several highly reputable law firms both on St. Thomas and St. Croix although I would guess that your druthers might be for St. Thomas which right now is the seat of government.
I would suggest that you check the USVI yellow pages (the larger lawfirms are pretty obvious) and then come down here for a visit to both research and personally deliver your resumé. You could of course fax or email your resumé beforehand with a cover letter expressing your interest and what sort of law you're interested in practising, but a personal visit should be a must on your agenda. Good luck!
Hello Mag,
Perhaps this site might be of interest: http://www.vid.uscourts.gov/
The VI Bar web site works sometimes and is down other times. It doesn't seem to be working today. But its http://www.vibar.org/
You might want to get the Settlers Handbook, shown at the top of this very page. It discusses various aspects of living and moving to the VI and can help you plan your move.
Good Luck.
