finding jobs
Hello to all,
I am new to the message board as far as posting however, have been reading for 6-8 months. I realize you all answer the "finding jobs" question a million times but thought I needed to introduce myself and my husband, tell you a little about us and take it from there.
My husband has been in the telecommunications business for 19 years and works for Nortel Networks (which has been laying people off for 5 years in the US due to crooked corporate crap). He is also an electricians assistant (could get his master electricians license) and excellent tile layer, builder, etc. I am a pilates practitioner and massage therapist. We currently live in North Carolina, where I am from (my husband is from Florida).
We have visited both St. Thomas and St. John two years in a row and, of course, fell in love with St. John's slow pace. We have lived in big cities (which ours is now becoming) like New York and Miami and small towns; we are both ready for a slow lifestyle. We do not have unrealistic expectations of island living and realize that it can be difficult and you must give up certain conveniences to live there. We are still ready to move! We are very used to hurricanes (my husband has lived through several in Miami and I lived through several in NC, living on an island), hot weather, cockroaches the size of small birds...and, yes, they fly here, too...no A/C, etc. I think we could handle living on St. John. The cost of living there is expensive, I realize, but we are willing to live in a small, one room cottage with our 1 great dog. We are willing to work on St. Thomas and commute.
Anyone who can point me in the right direction as far as getting jobs for us both (particularly my husband) would be so helpful. I check the VI job board twice a week as well as the VI Daily News...any other suggestions???
Thanks for being so helpful to so many people...you guys are fabulous!
Welcome to posting on the board ;),
Your husband can look into Innovative http://www.iccvi.com/default.asp
License for Electricians - you can find those details at http://www.dlca.gov.vi/eecjerequirements.htm, he could persue this field as well but likely would be better able to do that once on island and able to network.
You can check out the various gyms and see about teaching pilates and doing massage work, also at resorts. Since you mentioned St. John that would likely be the Westin Resort, I don't know if Caneel Bay has a gym. Call around and ask questions. Maho Bay http://www.maho.org/WHAM.cfm has activities like yoga/massage etc. so you could try there too. They Wyndham Resort on St. Thomas and Ritz Carlton have spas - and they are relatively close to the Red Hook ferry dock so would make for easy commuting. http://www.journeysspa.com/ is the spa at Wyndham. Not much posted on the Ritz Carlton's Employment page lately https://www.ritzcarlton.com/corporate/employment/search.asp?postype=-1&dept=-1&posName=-1&rg=11&sreg=38&location=-1&Search.x=43&Search.y=9 but you can check there, or call their HR dept. Hello Islander,
Thanks for the welcome. I will check out those websites for both my husband and myself. Actually, I went online and found that Caneel Bay has a place called the Self Centre that might be right up my alley...I will check into that as well.
Looks like you guys dodged the bullet with Hurricane Emily...I hope the rest of the season is kind to you. Our family in Florida was hit last year and again this year with Ivan and now Dennis. North Carolina has been spared the worst of them for a few years but I know we will get pounded again at some point. Hang in there!
I appreciate the help and will keep you posted on all findings.
