Finding a Reliable Contractor

We have a lot of improvements that we need to make on our new STX home to make it crip-friendly as soon as we arrive in early June. In addition to getting personal references from potential contractors, are there any USVI trade associations or licensing agencies for contractors that might help us figure out which contractors are reliable? Does anyone know if there is a Center for Independent Living or disability rights/advocacy group on STX that might be able to recommend contractors who have experience making bathrooms and kitchens wheelchair friendly? Have done a scan of the viphonebpook.com site but seem to be coming up dry on answers.

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated -- we really need to move quickly on getting the roll -in shower and/or tub with lift, grab bars, and widened doorways in before my paraplegia moves any closer to quadriplegia.

Thank you!

Hello Hip Crip,

The Virgin Islands Resource Center for the Disabled has a web site at

http://www.vircd.org/

I don't know how much help they would be on the contractor end of things as they are more of an organization for teaching and getting work programs in place. But might be worth contacting to see if they could direct you to the right people for the information you need. Good Luck.
