Finding a Job in the VI
Hello, I am a 28yo single male looking to relocate to the VI in a couple months. I have an International Business Degree, a Masters of Business Administration and a Masters of Science in Hospitality and Tourism Management, all of which are from accredited Ivy League schools. I am also a certified advanced level sommelier and I have a decent amount of savings which could be used to support myself for several month. My question is whether or not I would have difficulty finding full-time employment and what the pay might be like? I typically run hospitality establishments for a living and most recently I ran two restaurants and a bar in the New Orleans French Quarter so do you think I would have difficulty? Please elaborate because any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
With credentials like that, you should consider reopening one of the restaurants that have closed over the last few years. We need more great new restaurants. Just a thought.

Restaurants come and go like the Trade winds and there's a reason why.
I can imagine why, the last time I was there, I ate at several places and the food just wasn't that good, from the fish sandwich, fried chicken, pizza, pattie and bread pudding. What happened to all the local food, I would have almost killed for a plate of mutton stew with beans and rice. I'm going to have to bring my cast iron skillets when I come back down in May and see if I can't dispatch a few of those free range chickens and fry them up or make some chicken and dumplings.

Try Rancho Larino for lunch, Mike, when you're here next.
Really good, well priced. Located at Vitraco Mall.
Also Petite Pump Room has good local food.

As far as hotels go, you can check out the Ritz Carlton, Marriott Frenchman's Reef and Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville here in St. Thomas.

Or some of the places on STX or STJ. May want to stay away from Sugar Bay for a while though. We like to think of STX as one of the culinary capitals of the Caribbean.
Which is why I didn't include Sugar Bay.
They've definitely got issues.
They've laid off over 40 employees and are behind in issuing paychecks to the ones that remain.
On St. John, I'd recommend Caneel Bay Resort.
