Finding a job in STX...

I will moving to St. Croix in November from the states. I have applied to several jobs and I'm waiting to hear back, hopefully, with some good news! If in fact I do NOT get a job, how difficult would it be for me to pick up just any job(restaurant, hotel, etc.) to have until I find something more permanent? I have a nice nest egg to last me a couple of months. Any feedback would be helpful!

Cheers,

Sarah

Sarah-

Many of the places that are very popular, especially on the boardwalk, will probably have the positions for wait staff filled if you aren't coming until Nov., because they are going into high season. You didn't mention what your "real" field is...

I've seen some people get off the plane and wander around, then say "there are no jobs here" - I've seen others have a job within 48 hours. Depends on how hard you "beat feet" to get something if you are in the hospitality industry. If you work in a restaurant, remember you will need a health card...you can do a search on the board and there's a lot of info on how to go about obtaining one.

Seems the hotels need people, and you might check with real estate agencies - also, there is a temp agency here that might be able to help you fill in a gap. Still, most people want to see you on island before even being willing to talk to you.

Bring a pile of resumes if you are looking for a professional job -business cards are also nice...and as STT Resident always says, get a local cell phone, as not many will call you back on a long distance stateside cell.

Good luck in your search - if the things you already have in the works don't work out for you, post up some more about you and your abilities and what type work you are looking for. There's a very diverse group reading this board. Someone may know someone who knows someone...!

Hi Becky,

Thanks for the reply. I have a B.A. in Government and Public Policy and I applied for two jobs with the U.S. Attorney's office in STX. I currently work for a non-profit organization. Do you happen to know if "Island Trader" magazine is just for St. Thomas?

No, it is for all the islands, but you'd better have your handy-dandy notebook with prefixes available or for a while you won't have a clue as to what/where you are answering. There's a link to the VI phone book on here somewhere...if you do a search you will find it, I think Melissa S posted it a couple of months ago.

I know some of the prefixes on STX are 692, 713, 719, 772, 773, 778, 779 - there may be more, or they may bleed over to other islands (not sure about that one, I don't think so but it's all local calls)...The Avis is the St. Croix paper.

Sarah, please be prepared to wait and wait, and then wait some more, for a serious job offer. Have you been here before? If you haven't, now is the time...unless you are a professional coming in with secured employment, you may find it takes a little or a lot longer to get a job in your desired field....
