Finally Making the move

I am very excited. I have been vacationing in the VI for many years and finally have the opportunity to move to STX. I have a job and house waiting for me and am making the movie the end of this month.

I have arranged for personal gods to be shipped and will be shipping my jeep over a fee weeks after my arrival. I'll have a rental 'til it arrives.

I am moving with my small dog. I will need a good vet? Anyone care to review the vets on the Island?

What about recommendations for a gym?

I live in a small waterfront community here in the states (population 12k in the off season) so the island life is perfect for me.

Any word on the sea trials for the ferry? Is it going to run this time?

Any other last minute advice?

Any comments will be welcomed.

Ravensnest,

I will give you my feedback on two of the questions you have asked. On STX, I like Progressive Veterinary Hospital - both Drs. Baumann and Canton seem to be knowledgeable and caring. I have heard that Sugar Mill Veterinary is also good, however, I can't speak from first hand experience with them - perhaps someone else will chime in. As for gyms, the only one to speak of that I know about (other than 2 Crossfit 'boxes') is Beeston Hill. As a fitness trainer (and Pilates/Yoga/Massage Therapist) for the past 27 years, I can't say that I am at all impressed with this facility. There may be other facilities on STX that I am unaware of as I have a fitness studio set up in my house and don't have a need to find a facility any longer. I can't say that I was impressed with any of the gyms on STT either - all seem to let broken equipment stay broken for far too long and the staff's knowledge at the facilities I have been to is archaic. Hopefully, others will chime in with answers to your other questions/concerns. Feel free to ask me any other questions or PM me, I am happy to help. Best of luck to you and your pup with the move!

It could be a hit !! Certainly a comedy/adventure and hopefully not a disaster film.

there is a vet also in the west. i guess it depends on where you will be living on which vet you want to see.
there is also one in the east end. and of course the other 2 that were mentioned.

i think there is also a cross fit out by pizza hut?

we have a triathlon here on stx every year. we dont have any mudders or that kind of race.
there might even be about 2-3 other races throughout the year. nothing like you could get stateside.

They think they are moving to the states. Gym, really? Walk up and down those hills a few times a day or if that don't do it for you, go buy a couple bags of sugar, let it sit out for a few days and get hard as a rock due to the humidity and BAM you got a couple of weights.
hahahahahaha, Gym, your precious. You'll probably find a good gym near that shopping mall.

Thank you for your sarcasm, Mike. It is welcomed and appreciated. Glad to know that you have a sense of humor... I know that Island life is different than the mainland. I have lived in lots of isolated places and 3rd world countries. I am well aware of what I am getting into. I run outdoors here and am a diver. I am just looking for a place with a set of free weights as I am not bringing my gym equipment with me... I don't typically use sugar, but thanks for the advice.

Thanks Raven, I'm glad you do as well. I got a chuckle out of your original post. You'd be surprised how many come to the Islands wide eyed expecting everything to be like it was from the place they left, only to realize different place, different climate and different living conditions.

But you are about to start the adventure of a lifetime, just remember to keep that good humor because in the Islands everything slows way down.
