Well,
it happened, im finally here. im in st thomas, i spent the first night in a rental car parked across from a church. the 2nd day was spent trying to find a pad, no luck , finally we notice at 9:00pm that we were looking in a paper from sept 26th. so we spent that night on lawn chairs on a beach (not sure if its legal) finally we got a place at sapphire village, its a studio and its expensive but its really nice, i love it here, benn snorkeling a few times and i saw a shark tonight. were looking for jobs right now, and tomorrow i go in for an interview at a dive shop. i think that things are looking up. one thing i want to say to anyone planning on moving, bring a lot of bug spray and write down your idea of the island BEFORE you get here because its nothing like you think. lol., it is wonderful though, i love it and im here forever. mike

You lucky dog...and good luck! If I could convince my wife to pack up and head down, I'd be there already too! She's not one to fly by the seat of her pants like I am (and it sounds like you are). We're working on a plan, but it'll take longer than I want. 🙂

I'm envious...but best of luck to you!

Michael, you definately had an interesting first couple of days!! Best of luck finding an apartment - definately get current Island Traders and drive around and look for "For Rent" signs on the road - there are often signs posted in Wintberg, along Skyling drive, Northside areas too - I see a lot of them. Keep us posted on your progress!!

Do expand on what you mean on what your idea of the islands are before you get here as they might be a lot different - I am interested in what you thought before and after getting there. Thanks

my idea was one little beach bar where everyone knew your name, you know a cross between a jimmy buffett song and the old tv show cheers. i just didnt expect it to be as big as it is and as busy as it is ( not that im saying it is busy) but just busyer that i thought it would be. also my first view of it was driving through the back streets of frenctown at night. but i do so love it.

Michael,
You sound like an adventuers person. Wow, just to show up, and spend the night on the beach! I was wondering, do you know what kind of shark you saw? We were told it was very rare to see one around the islands. Good Luck with your adventure.

ray,
i was at sapphire beach, over by the marina checking out the reefs, it was as the sun was setting and i had my dive light with me, we were whecking out this school of it had to be thousands upon thousands of little minnows, and we were just swimming in and out of them and i saw the back half of this silver fish, it looked about 3-4 feet long, and as i started to chase after it i saw my buddy freaking out so i surfaced and he was like " dude, did you see the shark, shark, shark, shark" all as he was trying to swim away in panic. i almost drowned laughing. as far as i can say i can tell, but i did see a barricudda too. so usvi has definatly given me my share of underwater enjoyment. mike

It is more common to see tarpon among the silversides, is he sure that it wasn't a tarpon-shark???

Michael great story, I laughed at your explanation of your friend's reaction and yours.

I thought like East Ender; perhaps a tarpon. I have heard of that "tarpon-shark" from folks taking the evening-night ferry between St. Thomas and St. John and seeing the fish swim by.

Great to hear you are enjoying the underwater scenery!!

Glad the underwater scenery is so enjoyable... too bad the scenery back home isn't as beautiful or maybe you'd be with the girl you love. Start a fund... maybe you can get enough charitable contributors to fly me over. BTW, the story about the shark wasn't as funny when you told it to me.
