thanx dntw8; i found some articles, and the lynx ferry website, bringing me up to speed on the ferry situation; i still can't believe there is no service. it seems like not only is the service got a pretty big demand, but very lucrative also, and i can't believe the old company would just "drop the ball" so to speek. it's obviously quite a burden for people, especially for those who were /are working and living on two different islands.merry x-mas and good night;baja

baja: You are in for an interesting experience. There are daily events which will have you saying, "I can't believe that!" and then someone will say to you, "Did you forget where you live?"

P.S. People do not in general live on St Thomas and work on St Croix and vice versa. It is about 40 miles of open, fairly rough water. The only people who really travel frequently between the two are government employees, and they don't mind taking the sea plane at tax payer expense! 😉

eastender;i can't wait to get there;i guess if your going to be without water taxi service::on a beutiful tropical island is the place to be stranded.what about provisions?don't they run atleast one cargo boat a week. every sat. or wed, or something.what about catching a ride on that, is that allowed?!i'm in kind of a pickle, i sure don't want to have to spend a week on stt, staying in a "pricy" place, while looking for a ride to croix. what about private vessel owners, do many people run back and forth.what about fishing vessel?i'm no stranger to marinas, and would gladly check out the docks and piers.is there a name or website for the seaplane;boarding restrictions, luggage/cargo weight or size limit?
schedule, cost,etc.thanx,baja

baja: Here is the link to Seaborne: http://www.seaborneairlines.com/

You can also fly Cape Air, American?? and maybe some other commuter. You are flying into St Thomas? Why not fly directly to St Croix? Did I miss something?

While there is some commercial traffic between the two islands, mostly we get our stuff from container ships directly from the mainland. I don't think you are going to get a ride on one of those! As I said, it it not common for private vessels and fishing boats to travel between the two.

Baja, have you visited these Virgin Islands? I am wondering about your expectations about the place.

eastender;i've never visited usvi, however i've visited aruba, the keys-key west, grassy key, marathon, and beaver island mi.;alot of time growing up in fla. and i have friends that vacation, abaco, bahamas, kitts, aruba, and especially jamaica. their stories, of the atmosphere, lifestyle, people, and weather sounds like my speed. love to sail, powerboat, jetski, dive, snorkel, swim, windsurf, kites, hunt, fish, camp, and all around natural, down to earth type of guy. i've always been one to overcome adversity, and do whatever i set out to do, whether it be work, innovation/design, or any type(s) of challenge. i don't consider myself asking to much from life. almost everyone wants just a little more, me included, but i'm insearch of a more laidback lifestyle. everything is give and take in life; nothing ventured nothing gained. i'll be there, and can't wait.w/b; baja.

Oh for goodness sake Baja, the Virgin Islands are completely different from the islands with which you have some (transient, I presume?) familiarity. East Ender has given you really good advice which I second and third whole-heartedly and which I won't repeat.

We may be little dots in the ocean but you probably should do some more basic research on this forum and on the vinow.com threads.

Cheers and Merry Christmas!

There is a freighter, the Norma H, which makes the trip once a week. But is does not take passengers, no exceptions. I think it's both an insurance and a licensing thing.

According to the owners of the fast ferry, they did not make money on the boat. People who travel for business use the seaplane or Cape Air. It's faster and more pleasant.

There is really no way right now to get between STT and STX by boat. Even private vessels don't make the trip regularly, the water is just too rough.

So it's flying or nothing. It really is.

merry christmas; thanx for replying linda and, resident. i'm not picturing a straight you can swim, nor even see across. from the charts i've studied; the depth, and temprature of the water combined with the wind, funnel shaped straight, and overall windward exposure of stx would and does make for a pretty dicy jaunt across the 40 miles between stt and stx. even on the smoothest day with no wind i'm speculating 3-5 close frequency, so it still feels choppy; either way i'll be there on the 25th, can't wait.good morning to all, baja
