If there is no ferry between STT and STX, does that mean that the only way to travel back and forth is by sea plane? I'll be moving there in March, and my friend and I are trying to decide if we'd be better off living in STT since STX seems a bit remote. Paying $200 everytime we want to go to another island seems a bit much. We definitely prefer the prices/sizes of available homes on STX, but we're young and outgoing and don't want to be stuck out in the boons.
Along those lines- is one island more youthful than another? Since we're single and outgoing, it occurs to me that we would need a fair amount of available activity. Furthermore, we are currently living in Malibu, Ca. What do you all think about culture shock? Does life just sort oif grind to a halt when you get there? I appreciate any and all advice.

In addition to the seaplane, traditional planes fly between STT and STX. There is still talk of ferry service resuming but the prices quoted are not inexpensive, like the STT to STJ ferry, so if you like to island hop you might bear that in mind. Life in the islands is NOTHING like life in Malibu -- have you ever been here? If not I strongly urge you to consider doing so before you move here. St. Thomas is the busiest island so if you require a lot of activity that is likely your best bet despite the higher prices.

So I guess my question is, do people typically not travel between the islands, or do they have their own boats? Are there month passes you could purchase like in Hawaii?

People do not typically travel between STT and STX unless their travel is work related and employer paid. Private boats do not typically travel between STT and STX because the water is very rough. There are no "month passes" between STT and STX as there are in HI. Some small planes travel regularly between the two islands but they are not inexpensive.

Many people on St Thomas have never been to St Croix and vise versa. The two islands are 40 something miles apart- think Oahu and Maui.

Cnoelle: Use the search function here to look up "culture shock." We had a very lively discussion on this very point not so long ago. (At least it seems not so long ago!) Malibu to the VI, huh? Well, that will be a change!

East-ender:
I tried to look up "culture shock" to no avail. I'm not sure if you're saying that I'm in for a shock, but hopefully I'm mentally prepared.
I have no love for this country anymore, and although I know the VI's are a territory, I can't wait to get out of this ambivalent, self-involved, road-raged, snotty, Bush-run terrorist target. I'm not much for technology, I don't require a lot of the modern-day conveniences, I'm sick of pollution and I live for the ocean.
Will that help? Or is there lots more to consider? I would imagine that you have all answered these questions a thousand times, but I'm a little nervous. Are people on the islands ammenable to new "mainlanders" coming there? Or a are we all considered annoying litle tourists until we've been there for ten years? I'll be coming there in March for a couple of weeks in order to find a home, but all advance information will make it that much easier to concentrate on the important stuff- like finding a house or condo as close to the water as possible.

"terrorist target"? - STX has the 2nd largest oil refinery in the western hemisphere.
"sick of pollution" ?? - The islands pump 'gray water' right into the ocean.
"ammenable to mainlanders"?? - look up 'sucking of teeth' on this board.

sorry, but you need to come visit before you make some decisions.....

and about that house or condo near the water.......hmmmmmm......

Is it this one...

Also a quick note on the search links... there are two on this page. One in the very top right corner - that is the search option for the website. The search option for the message board is just above the message board in the forum tools (just below the row of books). When searching the message board change the date range from 30 days to all dates for better results.
