A couple of times last week (Fri & Sat?) I saw (from a distance) what appeared to be a ferry leaving C'sted heading towards STT. My first thought was it was transporting people to Carnival. I haven't seen it since.

You're right. One of the STT ferry operators does this over Carnival every year. No, there's been no reinstatement of any ferry service between STT and STX and there's been no mention of any current negotiations underway with any interested party. The Daily News, The Avis and the online Source are rather better sources of general local information than the infamous Coconut Telegraph.

Any news on the ferry that the VI put in a bid from Alaska?

There never was a bid put in for that ferry from the USVI. Only one bid was received by the deadline and that was from a company in the Netherlands. The USVI was/is under consideration as a destination if the ferry is going to be given away. No way can even taking it as a freebie be justified. The boat is hugely expensive to operate and maintain and there isn't the operating revenue here to support it.

I just read an article I found. 75K a month to insure and maintain and something like 300+ gallons an hour to run it. Too bad it is so hugely expensive to operate. I guess not too mention it would require a new dock.
I guess by bid I meant that they tossed their name in the hat.

That hasn't ever been a deterrent in the past. Krum Bay on St Thomas currently has a collection of marine vessels obtained from the Navy and Army that were "too good" to pass up. Most of the collection is stored securely just under the waters surface, along with part of the WIT fleet.

Darn! I was hoping you'd tell me about a beach I haven't yet explored.
