Just what the world (and this forum) needs - more separation and categorization.

Clearly, my suggestion about the subsections in this discussion forum was in jest, as a response to ms411, who implied that the only opinions that count are the ones stated by the people who live in VI.

Haha. Yeah, that's what you get when you ask, "Am I a target because I am a white woman?"

Maybe so, maybe so. Still think it was a valid question though based on why I asked it and the fact that I have been in the past for that reason. I got some good responses.

I totally understand that you want to have a safe environment for yourself and for your daughter. So, yes, technically it's a valid question. But in VI, it would be be considered politically incorrect at best, and offensive at worst. That's because the question contains a stereotypical implication that white women are victims, and black men are the offenders.

People, quit feeding the troll. If you ignore it, it will go feed some where else.

It was one story I read that prompted the question. The one about the man attacked with the hatchet. Anyhow, my question was answered. I meant no offense.

You've been targeted simply because you are a white woman? Do explain. I'm always curious to see how people come to such a conclusion as opposed to the more obvious explanation--they were harassed because they are women. I.e, would a man in the VI really harass a young white woman more than he would a young local woman he thinks he "knows" culturally? Fascinating.

If a black woman asked if your hometown was "safe for black women," wouldn't you be a bit surprised at the implication?

Yes, I would be. That question would indeed imply that black women are targets in my mostly white hometown.

It'd be a pretty offensive suggestion about the people there, no?

I apologize if I offended anyone. I did not mean to imply anything about people on your island. Knowing nothing about the crime there, I read a story about a man who was attacked by another man who was screaming "whitey" at the victim. My question was based on that and my lack of knowledge of the island. Not based on any preconceived notions I have. One reason I want to move somewhere else is so that I can experience a different way of life, including other cultures. Again, my apologies.

I used to work somewhere that was 90% black, some hispanic, and then me and a couple other white people. It was made clear by the majority that I was not liked because I was white. The few people there who did befriend me were harassed for it. It wasn't "crime" related, so it is different. I was a target of ridicule, not crime.

Now that we have covered race and crime (my favorite two topics), lets move to something else. VI politics, perhaps? Another good topic to discuss, since you are apparently a single woman, is dating and sex in VI.

"With regards to my participation in this thread, the original poster contacted me directly through PM, and asked for my opinion about certain things. Then she started this thread. It's totally up to her to read the multitude of the opinions, and to make up her own mind about relocating (or not) to VI."

If OP is asking for opinions/advice from someone who doesn't or hasn't lived in the VI, I can't imagine how she can get an accurate response.

I think the OP should move to PR based on what she has said she is looking for. PR is less Americanized than VI if you live outside San Juan.

Well, you wouldn't have without all wanderer's posts and the back and forth due to them that have resulted.

I would suggest that you evaluate that fact that the majority of people that post here and actually live here, whether they're newbies, local, native, transplants, been here forevers, black, white or purple, etc.,
all consider wanderer a troll and much of his information, slanted to his own personal agenda and contains many inaccuracies in fact and perception of living in the VI. Don't continue to get sucked into the delusions and engage the nonsense.

Living here is vastly different from visiting for 7 weeks over a 2 year period, much of which he spent stoned by his own admission.

As far as this thread goes, I'm done.
Look to the ones, like pilatesgirl and others, that have given you good information. Good luck on your move if you choose to do so.
