Family of 4 wants to move to St Thomas
So My wife and I are starting to plan our move to St T. We have 2 kids ages 9 and 6 now. I would like to open a restaurant and my wife is a nurse. Any thoughts on schools for the kids? Where other "mainlanders" live? Any advice in general?
Thanks!:D
What kind of restaurant? Thai, please 🙂
Statesiders live all over the place. Have you been here before? Restaurant biz is tough everywhere but especially here. You might want to work in one for while before you leap into that.
I am a fan of http://www.vimontessori.com/ for school.
Your wife might want to check http://www.rlshospital.org/ for jobs, although nurses are in demand in lots of other places as well.
Definitely need to check the food and beverage biz before jumping in.
My daughter went to Montessori from K-6 and I was very happy with it. She now goes to Gifft Hill School on St. John and I am happy with that. I have a friend who has sent her daughter to All Saints and is now going to public school - Lockhart Elementary. Happy with both. Have you visited or been to St. Thomas before?
I would suggest ya'll start reading this relocation forum all the way back, its better then any book out there for relocation information and it will answer questions you have not thought to ask yourself about a move here and quality of life, expenses, culture, etc... Quite a few opt for home schooling but with two kids you might need two incomes. Its more expensive to live here and generally you will get paid less then what you make stateside.
Most people will recommed private school for your kids and the costs for private schools are much higher then stateside. People recommend them not because we are elistist but because the public schools have real problems.
Happy researching and good luck.
I have been researching for about a week and would move today if i was just me! But as we all know there are other considerations. Will keep looking at the restaurant thing, oh BTW it would be a burger joint. I can always be a stay at him dad! Read a few places the NE side of the island is more residential for families. Would you agree or disagree?
Have you ever been to the USVI? If not, PLEASE come for a visit first. And if you can't afford to come for a visit, reconsider making a permanent move.
Most areas are residential for families.
Yes my wife and I have been and we are planning on going for a 10 day visit in about a year or so to do some more planing.
Thanks
