Hi I actually will be moving to St. Thomas. I am an accountant so if anyone knows how to get a job that would be apreciated. As I have already stated I do have a 14-year old son and naturaly he has a few questions, so I thought this would be the best place to ask them. (Some of them do sound kind of stupid)
1. Does St. Thomas have a skatepark?
2. Where do kids hang out after school (he will be attending the antilles school)?
3. Is there a tennis or basketball team on the island?
4. Are there any "teen" nightclubs
Thanks for answering his teenage questions. I can't wait, im just in the process of convincing my wife we need a change of life!
Peter
Peter,
I am going to start by saying my Message Board Motto - The process of enlightenment is not in the answer but in the question!! So the questions are not stupid at all, in my opinion.
There are no skateparks. There are some teens who like to skateboard - I remember a little click of guys from highschool that were the skateboard group and the girls that ohhh'd and ahhh'd behind them. LOL!! These were schoolkids from Catholic School, All Saints and Antilles... they would skateboard in parking lots, along the Waterfront....
This hasn't changed, although its been a while. There are still a group of kids that like to skateboard and primarily from the schools mentioned. There is I beleive a group of parents who are trying to build a skatepark though. Antilles does have an obstacle course set up that just recently was added, I think wall climbing, rope climbing, buddy excercises. Antilles school has lots of afterschool sports your son can get into; flag football, baseball, soccer, volleyball, wrestling, basketball... There are some island themes also - particularly in baseball. Once he joins the school team, he can find out information from other players and you guys from talking with parents. Tennis - there is a tennis association, for lessons and compeiting - I don't know much about it. No teen nightclubs, the drinking age is 18.... just a warning to you as a parent - some kids start trying to sneak into bars/clubs at 16 - 17 if they look old enough to pass for 18, most places id but the kids still try and they seem to figure out which ones are more easy to get into... or they just sit outside the place and hang out because they can't go inside, listen to the music and talk.... Antilles has several dances and parties at the school and that students have parties and get-togethers too. Hang outs after school - usually at the sports practices, at friends houses, at a friends pool, yatch club is a popular hang out too for Antilles students...
Antilles School has lots of activities that will keep your son's interest going in the sports field.

Hi I'm on my wifes laptop so I hafta be quick, but thank you for the information. My son recently got in touch with a child from Antilles via the school so they spoke about living in STT. My son is ready to move and wants to as he loves the weather, and isnt fond of his new private school here in New York. Next; my wife!!
Peter
How did your son get a hold of a student at the high school. We are looking to move to the VIs soon too and have a 16-year-old daughter who might benefit by talkint to someone before hand.
Don
I am not very good with computers but my son looked up people somehow on AOL and found someone who goes to the antilles school, so they spoke and now are becoming friends.
My daughter is 16 and stuck on going to St. Martin where we have vacationed several times. My wife and and I are hesitant about making a move to St. Martin and want to convice her that St. Thomas would be better. Does anyone have more info about the high school at St. Thomas.
Don
Don: Do you and your daughter have any idea about the schools on St Martin/St Maarten? I would imagine THAT would be some culture shock!! Anyway, Antilles has a website-www.antilles.k12.vi.us which might be helpful.
Don,
Will your daughter be attending private school on St. Thomas?

We were hoping public schools. She will only need two course to graduate here next year. She isalready started taking college courses at a state university though she is still a junior in high school. So her options should be a bit open.
Eastender thanks for the website we will check it out and yes looking at the schools in St. Martin was some what surprising.
Our vacations on St. Martin have always been fun if you discount that time that all our camera equipment was stolen from the car, or the time the rentacar broke down or the time....nevermind.
Don
Something else to consider. Would you be allowed to work on St. Martin? We chose to retire to the VI because, as US citizens, we could work. We thought about Mexico (our son lives there) but we'd be aliens and not able to work without a lot of hassle and red tape.
Thanks Linda,
Actually, that is driving us to the USVIs. There are quite a number of great Caribbea Islands. If I was by myself and did not have to earn a living, I would think about living on Saba for awhile, Jost Van Dyke for a while and Bonaire for a while. But practically speaking, St. Thomas seems to be the best place to settle in first.
Don
Hello Don,
Public high schools in the USVI have some issues. They lost acceditation a little while back. But your you could look into your daughter attending for the courses she needs to graduate, although the school might have other courses she might need to take also.... There is Charlotte Amalie High School and Eudora Ivana Kean High School. In private schools you could try Sts. Peter and Paul high School, All Saints High School, Antilles School.... The University of the Virgin Islands has an early admission program which allows juniors to spend their senior year of high school as a freshman in college. After successfully completely the freshman year they graduate with their high school class. The university allows this to students in the Virgin Islands - students take an admission test and based on their score or allowed to apply to the college. You might contact the college and inquire as to whether your daughter could take the admission test and perhaps work out an arrangement between the university and your daughters current high school - seems a bit far fetched but suppose it doesn't hurt to try. www.uvi.edu
