What sort of experience do the hotels/restaurants/bars etc... on the islands look for when hiring someone?

Or will they just hire anyone, based on season and qualifications?

Since there are so many different jobs in hotels, it is kind of hard to generalize. And the EDC regulated hotels have to hire something like 70% locals. But, if you are presentable (which is important in the tourism industry, if you are dealing directly with the public), intelligent and go after a job, you should be able to get one easily. However, if you are not very presentable (have 3 heads, a speech impediment, no teeth, a goiter, etc.) then you still have options behind the scenes (such as in houskeeping or maintenance). Typically there are more jobs to be had during the high season, but, since we have so many transients that only come to work for the high season, they are jumping on those jobs quickly.

Restaurants and bars are more apt to hire based only on qualifications, but ,then again, some people have never waited tables in their life and they get a job here and get trained on how to do it. Whichever category you fit into, I would recommend coming with a little $$ cusion, to make sure that you aren't sleeping in the street and picking thru trash cans for dinner! Haha! But, if it came down to that...at least the weather is great! Haha!

Hope this helps a little.
