Dear friend,

First, what a wonderful site. I thank you for such an abundance of quality information and objective advice.

I was fortunate enough to have taken an extended vacation in the Islands about 7 years ago while traveling with a friend's band, and visited with some friends and other Vermont transplants on St. John. Having grown disillusioned with the politics taking place on the mainland I am targeting a move to St. John in the next year or two with my boyfriend and our dog.

I am interested in seeking employment as a licensed Esthetician (skin care specialist). I understand I will need to obtain a license from the Office of Licensing and Consumer Affairs. My question is: What is the best place to find postings of spa-related employment? I will certainly be subscribing to the Virgin Islands Daily News, and checking the USVI Yellow Pages for listings. Another option would be to open my own spa, however I currently do not have the financing for that kind of venture. As an aside, this would be a Dr. Hauschka (holistic skin care) outlet; do you know of any where to get Dr. Hauschka in the Islands at this time?

Finally, I will be seeking a short term rental while I carry out my job search in St. John and secure longer-term housing. I saw a recommendation for a sailboat/houseboat for a very modest fee. Where does one find such inexpensive and shorter-term rentals?

Thank you for your help.

Warm regards,
~Eros

Hello Eros,

The houseboat I imagine is not a normal listing - East Ender came accross that in the Island Trader I beleive after reading a posters inquire about the same. Your best bet would be to get an Island Trader and go through looking for housing. St. John is more pricey in terms of apartments, Connections (a mailbox, fax, everything type office) often has postings on their bulletin board - might contact them and see if there is anything. Might also consider staying in a b&b on St. John or St. Thomas while finding a place. Finding an apartment off season in St. John is possiable, during season its very difficult.

Spa related employment. On St. John - not sure if the Westin offers Spa services - you can contact them and ask, contact their human resources about jobs in that field. On St. Thomas the Wyndham Sugar Bay property has a Spa, Ritz Carlton does as well... most of the spas on island are part of a resort. Not familiar with the product you listed. You might also consider contacting someone who does microdermoabrasion and see if they have openings for someone with your qualifications. On St. Thomas I believe the hair sylist Wavelenghts has someone who does Microdermoabrasion and other skin care treatments. But I think the Spas might be a good place to ask questions. If you look in the yellow pages like you mentioned and pull up spas and call - perhaps youd get leads that way. You might also see if you could work in a sylist's shop doing facials and the link as a joint venture - but since they already have an established cleintel it might be benefinical to you just starting out.

Good Luck

on st john...
the westin does hire estheticians, as does the grapevine salon [which used to be in mongoose, but is now in the marketplace, with starfish market], and there is a new place which opened up on the second floor of the building with the tropicale market in it, but i forgot the name. on the way to the westin. all the locations are frequently looking for workers, as turnover is quite high.
if you want to commute, both the ritz and mariott frenchmans bay hire quite a few.
enjoy, and good luck!
