With a little time before my guest's flight, we stopped at Estate Whim. Rather than pay $20 for the guided tour, we just started to enjoy the view at the entrance. We were told loudly that we had to pay the $20, even just to walk onto the property. I don't plan to return to that site.

Were you outside the entrance, inside the entrance, or out on the grounds?
Just curious.

Sounds like someone was trying to explore the great house without paying for the tour 😀

Took my mom there on Tuesday. $20 for the two of us...which is expensive but I consider it a donation to the Landmark Society, so no biggie.

They should, however, fix up their signage (or lack thereof) around the place. At $10 per person, you should get signage. The little museum next to the cookhouse about slavery needs some help too.

Whim operates exclusively on donations. You should have paid.

Walked on the gravel not much more than 25 feet from the parking lot.

Never got near the great house,

Linda, I just wanted to show my guest that there is such a place and had no intention of avoiding any fee.
BTW, it's clearly a fee, not a donation. Donations are voluntary, not compulsory.

I donate to lots of causes. The way I was treated at Whim was impolite. I won't "donate" to them.

I've had a similar experience with st whim. All of them have been bad. I understand they work on donations but I can see ruins for free all over the island. I understand most of the people are probably just volunteers but what are they thinking? Being pleasant would cost them nothing. I never take visitors there.

And paying money to get into their "starving artist" shows are insulting when the artist prices are not reduced at all. I think that's a stateside concept that is just not understood here.

Just my opinion

The botanical gardens which are near by are also run by volunteers and a delight.
