Estate Carlton?
Hi all,
I'm thinking about moving to Estate Carlton. No, I'm not new on island -- been here for 15 years. I'm looking for a little acreage to persue some horticultural interests, some quiet, and some good rainfall. I like the look of the area -- houses on large lots and big trees. I'm not looking at beachfront or even near the beach. My questions are for current or former residents of Carlton.
Crime any worse than anywhere else? How about noise -- airport, cars, ambulances, gunshots? Does the Diageo smell usually get as far as Carlton? Anything else I should think about before getting serious about real estate? Appreciate your time.
Happy New Year!
I used to live in Carlton. Always felt very safe there and my house never had any bars on the windows. I lived north of centerline up the hill and it was very quiet for the most part. It's a great hill for working out on too! Most people in that area have multiple dogs though and chickens, so there was always animal noises. Never or very rarely heard gunshots. Once or twice we got smells from Hovensa--I never lived there when Diageo was open.
One thing I would caution you about is flooding. Some of the lower properties can flood with heavy rain. Someone blocked the gut on top of the hill when I was living there causing my house to flood several times (anytime there was a flash flood warning, this is why I moved). Since the properties are big, the flooding can be extremely localized too.
I think it would be important to look at the soot Diageo is letting out. Take a drive down the rum road, and you will see how covered everything is in a black soot. The trees right across from the rum plant are black. Homeowners in Williams Delight have black roofs, I don't know how they are handling it. Carlton might be too close to Diageo for horticulture purposes.
Thanks, STXEM and Poodle for the info.

That's horrific!
Isn't EPA doing something about this? People must collect rain water from their rooftops and use in their cisterns to drink, bathe, cook, water plants, etc.. I'd be calling EPA to file a complaint and calling Diageo to come clean my roof and cistern and install a purification system for my drinking water. Why isn't anyone/everyone complaining? Why isn't Daily News or the AVIS doing a story on this? This could be a terrible health hazard for anyone living in the surrounding area to be breathing in those fumes that are causing that black soot.

Sooty mold perhaps?

Aussie --sooty mold was my first thought. I know my plants and deck here in Princess are covered with sooty mold and I have been treating with horticultural oil. There is a mighty scale insect to say nothing of aphids loose all over the island, and the result is sooty mold. Even the Botanical Garden has the problem. GuessI wouldn't be crazy about having it on my roof though.
