England to St Thomas - help please !!
Good afternoon all,
So glad we found this site -a lot of great information - thank-you all.
We need your help.
We are considering a job offer on St Thomas. We have visited as tourists, but before we fly over and take a look around, we really need some of your help and advice, as a flight from England is a little pricey.
The main advice relates to real estate. We don't seem to be able to find a web site featuring long term rentals. Can anybody help with a realtor that deals with this.
We would be moving with a 6 month old baby, can anyone suggest a suitable area to move to ?
Ca anyone offer opinions on childcare ?
Are most of the condo's for holiday rentals ?
Can we get a place to rent for apx $1500/month with at least 2 bed ?
Thank-you in advance.
Hi paulchar, sorry I can't help on the child-related questions, but as far as the flights being expensive, did you try UK -Miami (usually easy to get a resonable flight), then Miami-St Thomas on Spirit Air which seem to have very cheap flights. Also, if you are moving with your family, does the company you are planning to work for provide health insurance? It isn't something you really think about when you come from England, but it is extremely important here ( I could tell you some horror stories on that subject! ) Good luck!
Yes, you can find a 2 bedroom for $1500.00. You might want to rent where it's easy to commute to your job - you wouldn't want to live in Red Hook necessarily if you'll be working on the west end at the University. Make sure you check out anywhere you rent ahead of time.

Spirit Air doesn't fly out of Miami; the closest airport is Ft. Lauderdale.
I didn't know Spirit Air doesn't fly out of Miami, maybe because most times FLL is a better choice. However that leaves less choices for flights from the UK. Charter airlines usually have the cheapest tickets, but they tend to only fly during the season (winter), and the routes available are always changing. Still worth a try if you don't mind using multiple airlines.
It's possible to take a limo (taxis don't like to venture that far) between Miami and Ft Lauderdale airports, but it's time-consuming and a hassle (you have to collect your bags at one and recheck at the other.)
Have you checked out British Air from London Galwick to Antigua? Its then just a short hop to St. Thomas!
Thank-you all for the great advice on the air. We are already looking into Spirit Air and BA to Antigua. You know the response and help offered here has been really helpful, thank-you all.
Any suggestions on areas to target for living when we come for a look round ?
Thank again
I am from England and still have family there 🙂
I either fly (all on American Airlines)
1) HRW to JFK and overnight then take the non stop JFK to STT the next morning at 7am (ish)
2) HRW to MIA to STT all in the same day
3) Depending on the time of year, LHW to JFK to SJU to STT (all in the same day) - long but sometimes cheap - OK cheaper 🙂
Also try Virgin London to Antigua (non stop) conecting to STT on Liat
Good luck
Pia
I'm thinking of doing just the opposite! Contemplating barge living in London instead. Sailing there this May. We are a young couple. We came here so wife could go to UVI but are leaving because we don't want to have kids here. What kind of job is bringing you here from England? I would suggest you keep reading this forum and check the newspaper online then come stay for a few weeks before packing up life and moving here. No regrets however. Feel free to PM me. We just flew cheap on AA from here to Paris via Miami. Best deal we could get, 1K @ XMAStime ea. Good luck
