I was wondering if anyone can give me information about the certifying of EMT's on Island. Whereas on the mainland, certifications are issued by the individual States; do the Virgin Islands have a territorial certification board or operate under the National Registry? If not National Registry, can I attain reciprocity through application or challenging the board with testing and skills?

Once I figure all of this out, I would also be grateful to hear of any job opportunities available in this field. At least an idea of who employs EMT's on island and what type of demand there is for them.

Thank you in advance for the wealth of knowledge I can always rely on this board for...

Try St Thomas Rescue - 340-774-6356 - can answer that question. Can't seem to find a web site for them.

VI Daily News today had an article about the gov't being ordered to re-open some fire station that it had closed & the article mentioned that EMTs would be hired, I believe 6 on St Thomas, 6 on St Croix, & 2 for St John. I'm not sure about the numbers because it has been a long day at the hospital here on St Thomas. Fortunately it was THE LAST DAY of my travel assignment here & I'm SOOOOOOO Glad!!

Thanks PH,

I had already read the article which led to my question. I've had my application in with the Fire Service for a long time now and was just trying to stay one step ahead of them. I'm feeling more optimistic today as I'm sure many Islanders are. While I continue to wait, I was wondering if anyone has a picture of the new fireboat in Charlotte Amalie they could email me--or any of the stations, trucks, etc.

Adam: Currently the EMS is under the Health Department, although there has been talk about putting it in with Fire.
