My wife and I want to come to the Island but following a recent medical scare we need to know if the ER on the Island is of a reasonable standard. Also do they have 911 Medical assistance?

The ER has good standards yes for the most part. To better answer your question however, it would be necessary to specify what you might need ER for? In some cases the hospital in St. Thomas can not assist and they send patients to Puerto RIco. St. John does not have a large facility but has a clinic. St. Croix has a hospital as well, which is good - but is in need in some fields.

Are you visiting or planning to move here?

911 (never called it in the VI - I do believe its the police though) the ER at the hospital has a number to call, there are Abulances that can be sent out if that is what you are asking.

Islander is correct, as usual. St Thomas has pretty good emergency medicine. However, if you need heart or brain surgery, those kinds of specific specialties are not currently available. There are orthopedic surgeons, a cardiologist, internists, general surgeons, etc. If you are really concerned, purchase additional medical evacuation insurance. Beware, 'though! Some of the policies state that they will fly you to the closest hospital which has the service required- that usually means Puerto Rico.
