We are moving to the VI this Fall with two small children, one that will be starting school next year. I am curious as to how public schooling is determined. Is it by location? If so can anyone recommend areas on St. Croix most favorable in terms of public schooling. I know that we will be unable to afford the private institutions. Thank you!

I hate to sound negative, and maybe you have heard this before, but the public schools in the USVI are going through a difficult time right now. Some would say "keep your kids out of the public schools at all cost". There is a serious material and morale problem. The schools lack positive leadership and there is not enough control in the classrooms. Look into financial help in the private schools before you give up on that possibility.

Thanks for your honesty, Bill. Hopefully, we can find an alternative. Do you have any information about private schooling, such as an e-mail address? Luckily, my degree is in education, so I can homeschool my child, but would greatly prefer to promote interaction with her peers. I appreciate your help! Tiffany

Bill,
Do you feel that way about all the island's public school's or just St. Croix's?
Do the public schools need teachers at this point or are the fully employed?
Would like to teach when I get to the islands...just want to get a feel of what I am in for before I get there!
Thanks
Brooke

I know you didn't ask me but I just wanted to let you know that if you go to: http://www.virginislandsdailynews.com/ and do a search on schools you'll get tons of information on the state of public education in the USVI.
There are lots of problems and the secondary schools are working towards regaining the Middle States accreditation.
It's a tough situation but I'm sure that good teachers are needed.
Good luck!

All of my knowledge is second hand. I have never had kids in school here. I am only repeating what others and news sources have told me. The problems are generally considered to be on all three islands with schools. The problem starts at the top.
One of the local realtors has a web page with private school information. www.fedeles.com/schools.htm
