ELECTRICAL FEEDERS ON ST. THOMAS OFF LINE AFTER GENERATING UNIT 23 TRIPS
3rd Outage in less than 24 hours:
Headline: ELECTRICAL FEEDERS ON ST. THOMAS OFF LINE AFTER GENERATING UNIT 23 TRIPS
There is an electrical service interruption on Feeders 9C, 6A and 7A presently. WAPA's largest generator, Unit 23, tripped off line at about 11 am and presently there is not enough generation capacity to support the power demand.
Plant personnel are working to restore Unit 23, the latest estimate for full restoration is 60-90 minutes from now.
Sell...Sell...Sell. To a company that knows what they're doing and has capitol.
Power out in my location from 11 - 4:45.
3rd in less than 24 hours.
Just came back on.
BTW - the EVO box from Innovative that I just replaced the battery wasn't working either so no phone services from them. I don't normally check to see if landline is working but I did today.
I had enough to occupy my time without using my generator but I'm darned glad I have one.
No one is going to buy WAPA when their debts out way their value.
That opportunity came and went decades ago.
Here's the message I got when power restored:
ROTATING SERVICE INTERRUPTIONS AS WAPA CONTINUES TO RESTORE LARGEST GENERATING UNIT
WAPA is implementing a service interruption schedule until it has successfully restarted its largest generating unit, Unit 23, which tripped earlier today. Without Unit 23, the power plant does not have the generation capacity to meet the demand for power. Service interruptions exists on a portion of Feeder 7A from Mahogany Estate east and to the north side; 7C--Tutu area. At 1:30 pm a portion of Estate Peterborg and Valdemar Hill Drive will be without electrical service and if needs be Feeders 9D and 7D will taken off line. At that time, the portion of 7A and 7C will be restored. Large commercial users such as hotel properties, UVI, Yacht Haven Grande and others have already been taken off the grid.

Great not to have adequate power generation for our needs.
And they have the unmitigated gall to propose an $.08/KwHr increase all while Mapp wants $2M for his offices. The honeymoon phase definitely ended the last two days for me.

Selling is not the answer. Having the VI Government clear up it's debt to WAPA which I believe now stands at over $30 million is. WAPA does the best it can with antediluvian equipment it can't afford to replace while saddled with such a huge amount outstanding. Mr Bruno-Vega was the whipping boy for years, then Mr Hodge took over the dubious position and now the new director will be coming under fire. Every few years the government makes a token payment of a few million and then the same non-payment cycle starts all over again.
OUT Again on the western slope of Crown Mt!!!!
Is unit 23 the one WAPA is renting?
Is unit 23 the one WAPA is renting?
No.
I was a little puzzled to read this morning that the outages were "rotating" throughout the day. North side STT was out for the duration of 5+ hours. Our rotating flick-switch must have been in hiding. The good news was that when the power went out I had a bunch of pies in the oven and they were JUST done - serendipity! 😀
Is Unit 23 the one that was supposed to be repaired by the extra 7 cents per gallon of gas we have all been paying since 2012?

Unit 23 is the main workhorse generator (Unit 25 was the leased one). Any answers to questions you have about Unit 23 can easily be found if you google, "viwapa unit 23".
The answer to my question was not found easily with your search suggestion.
The first page of that search did not mention the 7 cent tax.
I did find the following, googling viwapa 7 cent tax:
from viwapa website:
One of the pivotal actions taken by the V.I. Government to aide WAPA was the passage of Act 7360. The Act established the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority Generating Infrastructure Fund which contains the proceeds from the gasoline tax which has been increased from 7 cents to 14 cents per gallon. The monies will fund new power generating units and/or heat recovery steam generators. This legislation is a significant component of the Authority’s plan to reduce the cost of energy, and will be the source, after completion of the Integrated Resource Plan, to purchase the first new generation in approximately 11 years.
from the source:
JULY 16, 2012
ST. CROIX - The territory's gasoline tax will double today - a hike that motorists may start to notice in higher prices at the pumps this week.
The 29th Legislature passed the gas tax increase - which raises the tax from 7 cents per gallon to 14 cents per gallon - in April and Gov. John deJongh Jr. signed it into law in May.
The law raises the gasoline tax, eliminates the Customs duty on imported gasoline that is consumed locally and sets up a fund so that the revenues from the tax can be used to purchase new generators for the V.I. Water and Power Authority and to help with the issuance of bonds for WAPA.

Thanks for your post, islandjoan.
I see no mention of Unit 23 in the press release.
We don't know if those units mentioned in the press release were actually purchased and are in use.
I don't have time for further research.

Then that nails that, doesn't it.
Did the power come back on North Side?
Does it come back periodically? I am off the island and concerned about my freezer status?
Everything's fine now. Came back on a little before 5PM yesterday and no outages since then.
Thanks OT.

It was on and off but if the freezer was closed the whole time it is unlikely anything got even partially thawed, especially if it was packed fairly full.
In a side note to the WAPA situation - I was at CostUless yesterday and it was almost empty of shoppers, I bought mostly dry goods and spoke with a few of the idle cashiers I know and they all said many residents were putting off their usual stocking up at CUL because of the uncertainty of the electricity for home storage in freezers and frig.
Hey I ended up eating ice cream by oil lantern at home on Sunday night myself.

I didn't have any "on/off" electrical spasms but then again neither did I have any "rotating outages" for the 5+ hours - just off period! Everything in the fridge/freezer and chest freezer just fine, no worries. I always have gallon jugs of water stashed for a shower if necessary but fortunately didn't have to resort to that although I was definitely pretty ripe by the time power was restored. All good lessons for newcomers to absorb. Love my outside solar deck lights as they provide enough interior light even on the darkest night and save me fumbling for candles and flashlights and generally tripping over stuff.
