Electrical employment
Hello all,
Back again Old Tart, I absolutely appreciate your wisdom and intuitive remarks on what I think might be , shall I say ," What I'm looking for".
I have watched as many videos and information channels on the subject of "The Virgin Islands" as I have studied my code book. I have an idea that relationships between , not only people of color, but just new people showing up on one of the islands, is a little uncomfortable. I am someone that wears many hats in the construction trade and I love what I do. Yes , you are correct, I have children (4) & (13) and I have a wonderful wife to help me with the 4 year old acting 13 and the 13 year old acting 5 . You know what I mean. I consistently find houses here in New Orleans that were "wired" by someone who knew what they were doing. From my experience in this area, Inspectors are not doing their job. At some point, people need to be held responsible, especially in the electrical field, for what they do to someones home. On the other hand, my past has given me a very unique experience that I have been able to use all of my life. I taught outdoor education at Southern Illinois University. I led backpacking and canouing trips in the states and Canada. I taught wild edibles , spelunking, bouldering, rappelling, wilderness backpacking and desert environment in the Texas "chisos Mountain " range. I have no doubt that my knowledge would allow me to support my household and protect my family. I am still wondering why someone in the electrical field from your area hasn't contacted me. I contacted several electrical contractors in the area . Sorry, wife says enough.
thanks
Bert
Good Morning Bert,
Would have been better if you continued on the same thread rather than starting a new one. Briefly, the reason why nobody in the field has contacted you is because the majority of people who think they want to move here don't. Even if you've directly approached prospective employers from off island, sent in a resumé, etc. it's unlikely you'll receive a response. You need to physically be here to seek employment and even then (and as I mentioned on another thread) the attrition rate of newbies is huge and your staying power will be viewed with scepticism. It's just the way it is!
Have you thought about how your children are going to continue with their education here? There are tons of posts on the subject and it's an issue which needs to be addressed. The public education system leaves much to be desired. Private schooling is excellent but is very expensive and this is going to be a huge financial load for you. Hundreds of people who've moved here and lived here for many years move stateside once their children reach school age ...
Have you planned a PMV? The importance of doing this can't be stressed enough.
I'm sure your talents and experience are exactly as you describe but relocating here is nothing remotely like moving from state to state and living here is nothing like living in Anytown USA.
You need to do a PMV and, if after that you still think that moving here would be a good thing for you and your family, it might not be a bad idea to live and work here by yourself for a few months before deciding to have the family join you.
Good luck!
oldtart has wisdom to share, cant stress enough the reading of posts over and over again. please also consider our current financial issues on island. what the closing of hovensa will mean to all who live here not just those who work at hovensa. they have estimated the unemployment rate going up to 18% on stx. this will have an impact on all things from gas, electric groceries to schools.
private schools are about 10,000-13,000 per child per year.
read all of the threads concerning crime, education, cost of food etc.
