Electric Rates?!?!???

On this wevsite (VI Moving Center) it lists the electricity costs as $5 base plus 8 cents per KWH. Is this outdated information?

I have had one person tell me this place has the highest electric rates in the world, and I saw a friend's electric "bill" on her monthly condo invoice. The condo invoice had the electric rates at 30 cents per KWH, which is nearly quadruple what the VI Moving Center lists for the rate.

Can anyone who owns their own home or at least receives a real bill from the electric co verify any of this?

We've been running our window box a/c at night, and today since I BBQ'd myself this weekend, but I don't want to have to take nitro pills when we get our invoice.

On that note, is it legal for condos to pad the electric costs, just out of curiousity?

Last time I checked it was about 22 cents. It has been going up, doubt that it's 30 yet though.

Electricity is high because it is all generated using oil and WAPA didn't hedge their fuel costs so with oil being high they pass their increased fuel costs right on to you.

Another problem, which WAPA has, is high line losses, i.e people steal electric power. Just like shop lifting someone has to pay for it so you get to pay for WAPA's 10% line losses.

Not sure what the formula is that WAPA is using but it is outrageous. My WAPA bill started at $400-$500 last year and has now climbed to over $800 per month. I have cut back on AC and the pool filter time but it just continues to spiral out of control.

Sounds Like it is time to investigate Solar and Wind alternatives?
Anything like that used here in the USVI?

A lot of places in the states that have people generating wind generator power and exceed their use sell theirs to the electric co. at a profit. Is that a viable alternative in VI.Between solar/wind power/desalinization(my brother uses on his sailboat)there are more reasonable alternatives to the rape of electric companies on islands everywhere. There is a few alternate energy source catalogs that can send a set up to the islands for people.Where theres a will there is online shipping.Does anyone on the islands have solar/wind setups????

Hello Lora & Edgar,

Perhaps the folks at the Dept. Of Planning and Natural Resources Energy office could answer some questions on energy conservation and alternate solutions here in the VI.
