Eat at Cane Bay

I know this was just a soft opening but if you can't do better than this.....,
Glad I got to go there before we left because if they don't improve they won't be in business when I return in June.
The Philly Cheese steak was so so, the burgers were very small and only available in well done. The fries were terrible!
The ice tea was so weak my friend said he could barely taste it. I just had water as the waitress never asked me if I wanted anything else.
The rest of our group said they would give them one more chance in about a month.
The waitress kept telling us " it was a work in progress". Maybe they should change the name to that.

Did you tell them all this? It might help them for the future. Wish I would have known, I would have gone too. I don't know anything about whats going on with it, new owner wise and what they're wanting to do with it. I think it'll be hard to beat that pulled pork stuffed burger I had last time I was there (like a year ago). Too bad too as the location- scenery is to die for.

So sorry to hear this after knowing how good Eat was.

But, a small, over-done burger Is easy to make bigger and cook the way the customer wants, and, horrible fries can also be fixed!

Let's hope they hear the complaints and correct things. Makes me wonder if the new owners are experienced restaurant owners or just upstarts??

First impressions are very important and word spreads fast on STX. If they come out of the gate with crappy food and poor service, many of us won't ever bother going in the first time to even check it out. Dead in the water.

i always give new places a few trips to 'get the bugs out" Castaways was horrible when they 1st opened but once they got their act together they greatly improved. Love their pizza Give 'em a few weeks or so to get their stride....

My review of the “new” Eat at Cane Bay: Oh boy, where do I start?

First, the service: We were greeted with some friendly hellos and seated promptly. The young lady who was waiting on us was friendly enough as well, and took our drink order (I’ll overlook the fact that she brought me the wrong beer, despite having a conversation about exactly which beer I wanted). But, she never explained the menu or told us anything about the specials on the chalkboard. So my wife ordered the caprese salad and I ordered the jerk chicken sandwich (which came with fries).

The food was served quickly enough, which one would hope given we were the only patrons at 6:00 on a Friday night. I can honestly say this was the worst meal we’ve had in 13 years on St Croix. My wife’s dish, the caprese, was three slices of under-ripe, pale-pink tomatoes with a small hunk of mozzarella on each, and a strip of pesto on the plate that tasted suspiciously like the jar they just opened from the grocery store. At $12 for that dish, it was a travesty. Mine wasn’t much better. The chicken breast—which, granted, was a good size—was clearly pre-cooked (god knows when) and heated when I ordered it (and not thoroughly, I’d add). The fries were cold—who knows when they were made? That was $12 as well.

The young lady waiting on us never checked back after delivering our meal to see how things were. We eventually asked her for the check, and paid up. The wait staff was apparently too busy hanging out with their friends by the entrance to concern themselves with the only customers in the place. In fact, no one ever asked us how things were—which we found odd, given they have only been open a week and we were the only customers there. We would have gladly shared our thoughts with them had anyone asked.

We were really hoping this incarnation of Eat would be good—we loved the old Eat and the location. I’m hoping they can figure things out and improve their operations going forward.

That is ashame , I hope they get things on track .

Perhaps you decided that you didn't want to bother, but you could have complained to someone and sent the food back with explanations of the problems.

On the other hand, your description makes the place sound like they simply don't care.

Went in last week. It wasn't bad - wasn't amazing. I would say middle road. I had fish tacos - GREAT flavor on the fish - it was clearly fresh mahi - not frozen which was nice. It had some cabbage stuff and some wasabi sauce that was good but it was pretty hot. Needed pico or tomato or some acid. Im picked about my fish tacos lol. I like heat but I bet a lot of people wouldn't dig on that wasabi sauce. I wanted onion rings instead of fries - it was an up charge so I said ok. Turns out when we got out check a $5 upcharge. So my fish tacos and rings cost $20. Ouch. Oh the onion rings - not good. I did tell them. They're spiced with thyme - WAY too much. Good batter though.

Also at the table was pulled pork sandwich and a burger. Pulled pork was too sweet for me but decent. Burger was fine. Nothing outstanding but not bad at all. Service was great actually. Several ladies working and all stopped by helping each other and checking on each others tables. It was not packed but a decent amount of tables. There was, I assume the owner or the manager asking tables how everything was and helping the bartender.

Overall it was good BUT I won't go back unless they adjust their prices. $75 plus tip for lunch is just a bit too crazy for me... well for bar type of food anyways.
