Hi all.

Although the "natural concerns" topics seem to focus on the "H" word, I wonder how things have been on the "quake" front. My last two visits have been fine, but prior to those I have had experienced, on fairly recent vacations, some pretty strong (if anything shakes or I hear the rumble, I think its strong) earthquake activity. I later read up on the activity and learned of some kind of fault line that I seem to recall being not too far from STT. Honestly, these things scare me more than Hurricanes.

Has it been quiet?

by Lynda Lohr
June 29, 2006 –– For the second night in a row, an earthquake shook the Virgin Islands, just as many residents were sitting down to dinner"

check out this site. Pretty interesting. If you click on the word map by whichever quake you want to see more about it maps it for you.

Linda - that site is very cool. It appears Java is in much worse shape than we are when it comes to earthquakes!

I'm guessing this quake was not felt on STX. I was at the bar at the Ft. Christian Brewpub at that time on 6/29 & I didn't feel a thing 🙂 !

Linda: What is REALLY interesting is that the site notes 9 earthquakes in the Virgin Islands region on 7/15, including a 3.7. I didn't hear anything about that, and 3.7 is big enough to feel- I think the one on 6/29 was 3.4 and lots of folks felt it. Of course, it depends how deep it is, also. I believe the 6/29 quake was very close to the surface. If you look at the Java quake, which was 7.7 and the number of 6.0 aftershocks they had, you have to really have empathy for them.

March? Bluie, that was a long time ago! And we do have fairly frequent quakes! The two the end of June were interesting. I did not feel the first one, but the second one really shook the place for awhile.

I did. I've found the earthquakes here to be very different than those in CA. The quakes in CA tend to be twisting/jolting/shaking quakes whereas here they're rolling quakes.

EE, I was just thinking that a 5.3 might stick in the memory. I am not used to them like many of you seem to be. I am glad to read that they are so frequent because it makes me less concerned about my rental villa sliding off of the side of Peterborg next month 🙁

I am kind of a worry wort about disasters.

I'll stop worrying about the shaking and go back to reading about the Tsumanis 🙁 I''m on a page reading about the STT Tsunami of 1867. This is after I spent last night reading about the hurricanes and the plane crashes.

I can't WAIT for my vacation. Can't ya tell?

There have been only two earthquakes on STT that I REALLY felt when everything on the shelves was rattling and rolling around and I did get a little nervous. But that was in the late 80s and early 90s and there was no damage whatsoever from either of those two "big" quakes which I believe were in the 5.0-6.5 Richter scale.

All those others? They come and they go, I sometimes hear them and feel them but then often I don't.

The Virgin Islands are indeed on a major fault line equivalent to that on which California lies and, as I posted a long time ago, the seismologists who came here in the 80's predicted that within the next 10 years the VI would be hit with the big one. Sure.

Hurricanes are unpredictable, can hit one Virgin Island with infinitely more force than another, and thus with earthquakes too.

Bluwater, do stop fussing about disasters and just concentrate on your VACATION! Cheers!

Dear Bluwater,

I do hope you can let go of the worry about things that are not in your control and just enjoy your vacation! The earth is evolving, perhaps not for the best, but it is, and you could really drive yourself nuts thinking about the WHAT IF'S..... Although I have not lived here terribly long, I have never felt an earthquake, nor encountered any problem that I didn't deal with in NYC, CT or South Carolina.

Not many people out of NY know that there is a major fault line there as well. Living in a basement apartment, I often had glasses breaking, dishes falling etc. I did not run into the street screaming, I just got a broom and a dust pan. THAT I could control.

If you can think of anywhere in the world that does not have earth or weather related dangers, let me know. I'm not criticizing at all, but just trying to put things in perspective.

Warm regards, and hope you do not bring disaster books on vacation,

Dan

Yes, yes - you are all correct that I should stop worrying and think happy thoughts only. Starting today....

good friends - old and new, beaches, blue water, swaying palms, smiling faces, the smell of the island after rainfall, sailing, night ferry rides to STJ for dinner.......and other favorite things.
