I believe you need to be 16 to get a permit (and you need to take and pass a written test of the road rules) and your parents have to fill out a consent form and then you can take the road test for the license. If you are 18 then you can take the test for the license on your own without parental form.

Do you need to re-take the test to get a VI License if you already have a one?

Hello Richard,

You have to get the medical form filled out (which includes a series of questions about your health and then a Visual Acuitiy Check) you can get the form filled out (just one page) at the Eye Doctors Office.

Then you have to take the Written Part of the Exam to see if you know the USVI laws to driving, they will give you a little book to study from. You do not have to retake the driving part of the test, just need to present your previous license. Then they will switch your license to a VI drivers license.

If your stay in permanent then switch, if you are staying just for 6 months or so then keep your old license, you can use it for a certain period of time so long as it is not expired.
