Drivers Licenses/CDL
Can anyone tell me if when you change your drivers license from a stateside one to a VI one if they retain (or even use) the CDL (commercial drivers license) endorsements?
I worked very hard to get the endorsements I have and would not want to lose them when I move over. You never know when you may need them again!
Thanks!

As I understand it, you would need to re-qualify for your endorsements. But I could be wrong. Call 340-774-5675 for a definite answer.
The USVI don't have a CDL license endorsement. If you beg and plead enough, you can get them to let you keep your mainland driver's license in addition to your USVI license. You have to plead on the basis that you will still need to be able to drive a commercial truck when you visit the mainland and that the islands don't have a reciprocal endorsement. In the end, it comes down to the person who prints your new license. They may hand you back your old license or they may keep it. I do know someone who was allowed to keep his stateside license when he got his new USVI license, solely because of his CDL endorsements. Good luck!
Thanks for all the information!

If all else fails, when you return home tell them you lost your license and get a replacement.

I'm also getting a VI license soon (after 2 plus yrs on island), and have a plan to retain my stateside license. That license expires in September and I went to get it renewed this summer. When I go for my VI license I will turn in the old stateside license that expires next month, and I'll have my new stateside license which just arrived in the mail.
