Driver's License Question

Hi all,
I have a situation/question that I haven't seen addressed in previous posts, but I'm sure is not unique. I am going to be moving temporarily to USVI, for a period of ~9 months. Afterwards, I'll be returning to my primary residence stateside.

Since this is a temporary move, I don't want to give up my stateside license to get a USVI license, and then have to go through the process again in 6-7 months when I return home.

I understand that there is a 90 day period during which you can drive legally in USVI on a stateside driver's license, but I haven't seen any info or postings concerning a longer, but still temporary, stay. I'm sure there are people who spend more than 3 months at a time in USVI but who have a permanent residence elsewhere. Anyone have info or suggestions on how to handle this situation?

Thanks so much!
Guinness

Technically, you should probably get a USVI license. In reality, there are many who don't. More discussion here: https://www.vimovingcenter.com/talk/read.php?4,195272

Be prepared!

Most people were getting turned away today at STX DMV.(department of motor vehicles)

I got lucky because I had other biz elsewhere after that, and had "extra" documentation with me.

REQUIRED
Passport or Birth certificate
Two documents that state your physical address. WAPA bill or rent receipt were the examples being given. "Oh, you live with your Mom? Go outside with her and have an affidavit stating so notarized,....we'll take that."

$35 to renew for 5 yrs.

STXBob,
Thanks so much for the link--not sure why that didn't come up (or how I missed it) when I searched the forum for postings about licenses, but it addresses my question perfectly.
🙂

I wouldn't t bother. Cops don't pull people over here and spot checks are extremely rare.

I agree with vicanuck. I lived here in 90's and never got one. Just got my stateside renewed last year and am here now. I would think the snowbirds do not change theirs either, but, do not know that as fact.

I've been here 6 years and haven't gotten a VI license. Not because I don't want to, I just haven't felt like dealing with the DMV ever since I learned about fixers. I actually got pulled over for having a rope on the front bumper covering the license plate and the cop asked me about it, I said "yeah, I've been here a lot longer than 90 days and I know the law I just haven't made the time to go do it, I'll take care of it" and got no ticket. Probably suck it up and get one this year.

If you're really concerned about it, go to your local DMV before you come here and tell them you lost your license. They'll issue you a duplicate, leave that at home. When you get here and surrender your stateside license for a VI license your valid stateside one will still be waiting for you when you come back. That said, I've heard they are linking up with various stateside government systems and that trick might not be around forever.

and for most folks who are basically transients, how are the police supposed to know that you have been on island longer than 90 days? Different of course if you are working or involved in things on island or perhaps just picked your kids up from school or such so they would know you are actually living in the VI

FYI - it is illegal to do what is suggested in this post.

My friend Rick has lived there for over 15 years and still has his stateside license. He goes back stateside each year for a month for doctor check ups and whatever.
