dogs on beaches
Hello,
Are dogs allowed on any of the beaches in the USVI. I was also wondering if they were allowed in the Rain Forest.
Thank you so much,
Denise
Technically, no. But as a practical matter (on St. Thomas), dogs are found on several of the "local" beaches. Definite no at Magen's and the National Park beaches on St. John. Of the more well-known unofficial dog beaches, Hull Bay is the easiest to find.
I second Hull Bay. Nice beach and many doggies there. I, however, avoid it in teh middle of the weekend days b/c there tend to be a lot of families and, well, that is inevitably when your perfect dog chooses to do something embarassing.
Interestingly enough I was in STJ 3 weeks ago and a Park Ranger at the information booth/house in Cruz Bay said "leashed dogs are allowed on the trails, but not on the beaches." We asked her to confirm that leashed dogs are indeed permitted on teh beach and she did. We have not tested this out yet, so if you want to take poochie on the trails I would recommend asking a Ranger first and taking along some plastic scooper bags.
Also, I went to a doogy event on STJ earlier this year and some of the locals told me of some beach spots (which I have forgotten). Apparently, dog-friendly beaches on STJ do exist, you just have to connect with the right locals who are willing to impart their locations.
stj dog-accessible beaches...
gibney/ oppenheimer [just past hawksnest], anything south shore [ditleff, chocolate hole, and [not really but they never go there to check] reef bay], anything east end that's not park [round bay is nice], and the main beaches in town [though youre less likely to want to swim there... pup will be happy though.]
Dogs are a nuisance on the beach. please do us all a favor and walk your dog. Do not let your dog sh.t on the beach. Don't be so selfish and self involved that you think your dog is not a loud ,smelly, noisy ,pest.. Dogs are ok if you control them and clean up their @!#$. I am tired of stepping in the mess that your dog creates. Do you see yourself here....?
hehe. "cat people"...theyll never understand. =)
oh well =)
LOL, kudzu!
I always watch where I put my feet, don't know about the rest of you out there.
Was at a National Park beach (not in the USVI) a short while back and saw a sign that said no dogs on beaches because they transmit round worms to humans... being a non-dog person and not quite a cat person either 🙁 I know I know 🙁 getting frowns.... had not thought about that factor and it reconfirmed my shuttering when I see dogs on beaches close to me... 🙁 sorry guys. I just now recall a day I was at the beach on St. Thomas (one of the little local beaches) and was floating along when a big great dane came running through the water right onto ME... the owner applogized profusily while I smiled and *%&%&%&%& inside. And there was another day when a small dog ran up on me and threw sand all in my face... ahhhhhhh dogs!!! I do appreciate Onika's comment though about the little bag and scooper 🙂
Anyhoo....
Denise... the rainforest - you are making me think you are asking about St. Croix??? When folks refer to rainforest and the USVI there is an area of St. Croix called the rainforest.... please clarify... some of the beaches suggested were on St. Thomas others St. John.
