I am moving down to St. Thomas on the 15 of January. I will be flying down with my dog from Philly to San Juan then to St. Thomas. I was just wondering how it is bringing my dog through PR. Has anyone ever had any problems with shipping before? Also I don't know how to reserve a spot on the plane for her. I went on the web site for american airlines and only found out what to ship her in and what papers to have ready. I couldn't even think of leaving my lil pudge muffin behind....ok her name is Missy but u get the point. Thanks guys!

I had a US Air flight. But I had to call a special 800 number to make a reservation. I do know you will need a health certificate from your vet within 10 days of your flight, and rabies vacc within 6 months.

If you can get them on US Air I would try, from the research I did they had the best reviews because after a certain amount of time they will take the dogs out if the plane is delayed, etc, and they climate control the area where the pets are, A/C while on the tarmac, and heat while in the air. That why US Air is the only one that will fly a pet in the summer months, the rest ban pet flights between May and Sept. Damn, I didn't mean to sound so harsh, I'm sure AA will be no prob, especially since it in Jan.

I just baby my dog too much. I even specially booked a flight so he wouldn't have to change planes. He came through with flying colors, and I was clearly more stressed than he was.

Only been on island a month, and I know how hard it was not having someone on the island to help which is why I try to help. I'm semi retired, I do handyman stuff here and there, but for the most part just kickin around which is why I post so much. Janelle's begging me to find something, although I know she likes me doing the HoneyDo list and making dinner.

We bought a house in Mandahl on the Northside near the peace Corps School. I love it here more and more every day. Anyhow, I've always been the beach type of person. Hate cities, and actually life is a little to crazy for me here. Seriously, drivers here are NUTS! Today I had one guy pass me and the guy in front of me at the same time on a curve. I was considered an aggresive drive in Boston. jeez, now I feel like Grandpa.

Mosquitos suck. Although it has been especially bad recently. From what I have read Mosquito magnets take care of that. $1k ish to buy one but from my experience worth every penny, and much safer to your chromosones and all around health. Buying one myself VERY shortly.

I'm a little wordy and you asked an open ended question, so bear with me. The only thing that you have to be aware of is know where to go and not go at night. Its sad seeing people living in poverty, and then you wonder why SOME West Indians hate us. They've lived here their whole life and still make $8hour while we've been here a month making more than them.

In general, if you kill them with kindness, and say Good Morning, Good Day, Good Afternoon, and Good Evening, EVERYTIME you see someone, it will definitely help. I think people complain here about the rudeness of the West Indians, but they are probably reacting to the rudeness they displayed by not greeting them with the customary Good ----- which to them is an insult and they take it as if they are not even worth your acknowledgement.

Be polite, be aware, and just be.....................

There's my 4cents....

Laura,

It looks like US Air might be your only option. As I looked through the American Airlines web site for baggage limit info for my parents, I found this in the section about pets:

"American will not ship pit bulls, Rottweilers, Doberman pinschers, American Staffordshires or bull terriers."

Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news -- I'm another one of the animal parents who went through the same worrying about getting our animal here that you are. We also flew US Air, and they really were great -- watched them carry the one cat we checked from one plane to the other, and they set her carrier down in the shade of the wing and made sure she was the last one to be loaded and the first one to get off. It also looked as though one of the luggage handlers talked to her while she was being unloaded. She came through it a little hot but just fine. We can't say enough about how well US Air handled her and the two cats we took as carry on.

Re: booking a space for your dog -- I recommend calling US Air to book your tickets so you can tell them that you also need to have your dog checked on the same flight. (You can stil;l research flights and prices online and just tell the person on the phone what flights you want.) They can reserve a space for him then, and more importantly, they can tell you if there is space for him before you buy tickets on a specific flight that might already be at its animal transport capacity. The airline only asks you to pay for your ticket when you call -- the $100 fee for your puppy dog doesn't come due until you arrive at the airport and check your loveable little beastie in.
